OcUK Dadsnet thread

Has it started nursery/playgroup/school yet?

Enjoy it/them bringing home new germs the first week after every school holiday until they start uni.
Yep she started in April and I'd say we've had maybe 6 weeks scattered throughout that time where at least one of us hasn't been ill :o

Never realised how little I got ill until this started.

Our second is starting nursery in a couple of weeks, I'm kinda hoping/wishing/praying that because her older brother has already been bringing illness home from nursery she doesn't get as ill and pass it on to me and my wife.

Side note, can't believe she's 1! We always planned to just have two kids but I can kinda see how people end up having more especially as the second time around the 8-12 month stage so far has been much more enjoyable as we've been much more relaxed about (unsurprisingly) basically everything. No more kids though, off to the docs next week to discuss the chop

Someone will probably say it's all placebo rubbish but my missus has always given our daughter these vitamin/biotic things, and even though she's been at nursery and after school clubs etc for years she's actually very rarely ill.

It might just be luck but she's had them every day with her breakfast for years.

My wife and I regularly say the same thing. We would be sick maybe once a year max before having a kid - but we also never had someone walk up to us, sneeze/cough in our face and then ask for a cuddle.

This morning our daughter came into our bedroom, opened my wife's book that was on her bedside table, sneezed directly into it and then closed the book and walked off.

Yeah, we're considering a third vaguely at the moment. Our twins are 20 months today. The main thing holding me back is that I don't want to make my entire existence about children. Its already stressful enough with 2 and I basically never get a break because we both work pretty much full time. That and the deep dread that we could have another set of twins...

That is very true, not sure I've ever let anyone else basically spit in my mouth

I wonder how much of it is being ill (as a parent) Vs being more vulnerable due to being tired with kids. I always feel worse if it's been a rough night, twice this week my son was up a bit during the night and I had to ring in sick 1 day.

How are new dads finding school? My 4yo is coming on amazingly. I can't even white lie about what a Christmas card says because she can do her phonics and diagraphs and read most simple sentences now.

Eldest Daughter turns 2 tomorrow. Honestly, where does the time go????

My phone compiled a ‘one year ago’ thing for my photos, it’s already hard to remember her at that age and all her mannerisms etc at that time. Madness!
I've got 3; 5y/o, 3 y/o and a 7 m/o and my phone does this all the time to remind me how old I now am and how fast they're all growing up. I feel your pain! Enjoy the ride :D

I cannot wait for our boy to be out of nursery and start school. There's the clear financial aspect to it but I'm getting sick of the place and the way its run, other parents feel the same but the kids all know each other and have been going since a young age. One of my wife's friends got fined for picking her boy up 1 minute late. She'd never been late before. The staff there are constantly changing and we keep having to remind them basic things.

We need better pre-schools, I know it's regulated but the staff changing so much is due to pay and stress, looking after pre-schoolers is very challenging and the parents are just as bad a lot of the time

I'd be happy to pay extra tax / national insurance for better pre schools/nurseries run by local governments with higher rates of pay for the staff with better training.

The pre-school industry although regulated is still very open to cowboy/cowgirl business owners.

I think a lot of it is down to management though. To capture more of the value for themselves, they really need to staff like 6-80% with apprentices. Extremely difficult to change that as people don't set daycares up to become charities.

Not sure the gov have a track record anywhere at all that would prove they could do this :D. My girls teacher is off every other week and there is nothing anyone can do.

Maybe government can't, but there must be a better way for pre-school care

Seeing as they've set the economy up where it's now almost a necessity for both parents to work

First day of Xmas leave, only to be greeted with a torso full of chicken pox when doing the first nappy change of the day for my eldest. Couldn’t make this stuff up :-D

Our younger daughter will inevitably catch it (3 months old), poor girl has been through the wars lately dealing with her immunisations, and a couple of colds (which also definitely came into the house via the elder daughter!). Throw reflux into that mix and it’s been a rough few weeks :-(

Phoned the nursery out of courtesy to inform them incase any other parents need informing, as patient zero is transitioning into the 2-4’s room from the 6th Jan, she’s been mixing between both rooms for the last 2 weeks, so potentially every other child at the nursery has been exposed :-(

Apologies for the double post!

Humidifiers.

Has anyone got experience using one to try and help out a young baby with their congestion?

We have a “0.5” bathroom in our bedroom (just a shower/bath, no sink etc). We filled it with a few inches of hot water last night and very quickly saw our little one get relief from it, sounding much less nasally and relaxed.

On this basis we have a humidifier en route to give it a try, she’s already been to a GP for her last bout of cold like symptoms, who recommended one at the time.

Outside of the usual checks online for do’s/dont’s etc etc - Just hoping to pry any info/experiences from you guys, appreciate any input!

No pro experience, but we have a Vicks endorsed unit, we don't put Vic's in however we just use water.

Our boy is far from a baby now but when he's ill he still likes to come in our bed and it settles him, we put the humidifier on the bedside table pointing towards him.

It does work wonders, we only use it of a nighttime as that seems to be when colds are at their worst and affects him the most.

When he was a baby we used to buy the unit on the floor next to his cot where he couldn't get the cables

When kids got chicken pox at school, my daughter thought she would be extra special and got Scarlet fever instead.. Managed to avoid getting chicken pox somehow.
