OcUK DDoS attack - £10,000 reward

You should do premium membership or something, for like £12 a year or something and you get to swear and have big sigs and other stuffs :) and put it toward hosting costs.

And the guy that said the £2000 box would stop this, if Spie is offering a £10k reward don't you think that this miracle box you speak of is not up to the task otherwise he would have bought 5 of them?

Firstly i havn't seen a normal penis in real life, the only penis i've ever seen is on porn, and those penises are the same colour as the rest of their bodies.

So to me it was unusual..

Secondly, I didn't ask "why". I asked how i can safely make it better, as i have no expertise in skin bleaching/whitening.

Only on OCUK can a DDOS thread turn into 'why is my penis a different colour' thread.

Brilliant.

Really decent of you, but we are far from struggling. OcUK is a well-run, efficient and profitable business. We are probably in the best position compared to our competitors to ride out any disruption or recession. Lots of others are on a knife edge.

Good to hear, with the current climate I just assumed everyone was having a hard time, the place I do part-time for certainly is. Best of luck to you in sorting out this problem.

Seems to have settled down for now, could be OcUK's defences working, or the attacker taking a rest.

ThePlanet helped us deal with some DDOS attacks back when I was hosting. Fortunately they were very helpful and managed to stop the attack. Every so often the attack would stop for a while, so we'll see if OcUK have sorted it, or if it starts up again later.

Maybe Spie has paid the ransom fee! :p

Was baffled until Yewen posted in layman’s terms what DDOS was. Seems a simple malicous way of bringing down a network. At least our security is not at risk :)

In regards to the reward, I hope anyone in the position who knows the potential perpetrators of this can actually take more satisfaction that the OCUK service is restored over the monetary aspect on offer by Spie (OCUK) :)

Hope this is resolved swiftly and the culprit(s) caught :)

Noooo, my post got deleted! :(

Anyways, back on topic: Pretty shocked by the whole thing really. Hope you manage to stop it and I know it's unlikely, but I also hope you catch the culprit.

I'm doubting they'll catch whoever launched the attack at all, especially if they haven't made any stupid mistakes. The attack is launched from hundreds, or even thousands of random computers that have been infected with the malicious software that sends hundreds of packets to the OcUK server, this effectively stops legitimate packets getting through.

Basically all the attacker needed to do was plant the software on hundreds of computers (botnet) and launch the attack from the 'master' software using encryption/proxies etc.

It's near on untraceable if done well.

So Spie, was it a ransom? :p

Spie

Im not sure if it worth mentioning or not,

but i work in Canary Wharf, and today at work our internet connection was terribly slow, not just OcUK.

reason im mentioning it was, i underetand the servers are based in docklands, which isnt too far.
i dont know anythign about DDoS but it sound like someone maxes out bandwidth. might be connected.

Works internet for me is always slow when you consider the amount of users hooked up. Even in an office of 90ish people come lunch time it can be a total nightmare to get onto the net.

so in order to carry this out someone has to first write and distribute spyware? incredible that someone would go to such lengths to attack a site. what do they get out of it? or is it for kicks?

I really can't see a disgruntled member of the OcUK forums have the ability to perform a DDOS. I just can't imagine a botnet owner casually posting on OcUK, don't ask me why...

EDIT - 500 posts in 4 years, I'm such a post count whore.

The botnets are in place well before the attacks take place. Its not like specific malware has to be written specificaly to attack OcUK. The infected computers are already infected, waiting to be given the command on what to attack.

As for motive, could be a grudge against OcUK, could be random, could be for money.
