OcUK Forums - Upgrade imminent! :p

Yeah, that did cross my mind and it is indeed sensible. But on the basis that vB is paid software, it's not like a *.0 release of something like phpBB so you're likely to get a decent piece of software with a fair amount of kinks worked out.

Well you'd think... :D But the early versions of 4.x were broken (the stylevars didn't work, amongst other things).

Version 4 has a blog system. Would be useful for product reviews I guess.
So has 3.7... It just isn't enabled on OcUK.

why change?

what benefits would it bring?!
Well you havnt read the OP... Staying on 3.x could be a future security risk.

I'd say upgrade to 4.2

With a forum this size, I personally wouldn't want to migrate onto newly released forum software that potentially may have more holes than 3.7. At least 4.2 has been though mass testing stage and has already had many patches produced.

I would imagine that they may well keep with what is here and running stable now.

Although they should probably go to the latest stable supported release (4.x I would imagine as you should never upgrade to a new x.0 release :)) and then customise it so it has the same feel and functionality as now (as we don't really need any extras above what is there now). Lack of new security patches probably makes staying on the current release a poor idea.

Are you running Windows 3.1 on yor PC, because that wasn't broken...

Never get the attitude of "if it isn't broke" especially when it comes to software.

People almost always under-estimate the impact of moving to a new version (of any reasonably large system). There is always disruption. There are always unforeseen problems.

I've never understood the mindset of "ooh, new version, must switch!"

Guessing the biggest issue for OcUK and the part that must require the most work is making the trust system work correctly in a new version of the forums? I could be wrong but certainly seems like a lot of work to me.

The thing is though, a side-by-side upgrade could be done and a slow change-over could be a good choice with new url's e.t.c and over time users could manually go over to new accounts e.t.c.

Maybe 100 or so beta testers under NDA lol!

New features, new servers and new technology could be awesome. Then again it might not.
