OcUK Forums - Upgrade imminent! :p

Isn't the trust system just a slightly customised "iTrader"?

I've no idea what itrader is :p maybe it's changed since or maybe I'm wrong but i thought i once read something about the trust system being written by an admin/ex admin of the forums specifically for its purpose.............albeit that was many years ago now, so not even certain if i'm dreaming that or not.

People almost always under-estimate the impact of moving to a new version (of any reasonably large system). There is always disruption. There are always unforeseen problems.

I've never understood the mindset of "ooh, new version, must switch!"

There's probably unforeseen problems going from 3.x to 4.x. By the time OCUK move version 5.1 would probably be out.

Better to go for the faster, more featured newer version than move to version 4, that whilst mature is only going to be end of life'd when 5.x become mature.

As for migrating software, well I've managed projects moving thousands of computers and users so I know all about how bad things can go (if not managed properly obviously!)

Are you running Windows 7? :D

Max OSX 10.8.1 for thanks :p

I have just had a nose around, and I can put passwords on some forums...including GD :D

Yes, and I don't plan on switching to 8 ;) I'm stubborn like that.

They can upgrade to 4.xx and have the forums looking identical to they are now, no idea why people seem to think upgrading would mean changes to the forum they see.

Maccy, just out of curiosity how much HD space does the forum take up with all the posts over the years?

Text doesn't take up much space in a database. Images do. Could well be quite large if the store the BLOBs with the database. I'm not experienced with vBuletin but I'm guessing 3.x doesn't support remote BLOBs.

Even if it did you'd still have to store the binaries somewhere else. Just more efficiently than in the actual DB.

50TB of SQL

Reddit has two tables in its database. Best scheme I've ever seen.

If it aint broke...

It isn't broke.... yet...

No point risking unpatched vulnerabilities, but I'd like to see an upgrade that maintains the simplicity of the current form. I'd cut myself if we moved to animated avatars and signatures, along with all the other random rubbish you see on most forums.

Excellent. Not only OS X but Mountain Goat as well. all my and the wife's Macs are running 10.8.1. That's how we roll, and it's much better than Lion too!

But according to you, if it isn't broke, then you should still be on Windows 2000? I mean that was probably the most stable release of Windows ever. :D
