OcUK Minecraft Server - Rules & Chat

All this talk about a new world or a restart can stop now, we do not in anyway need to do any of that until we are forced to because of updates.

If the running and paying for the server is getting too much I will take it over, I spend enough hours playing on the server to make it worthwhile.

well if we are going pay. if the cost is low enough i would be happy to pay as long as there is an easy way to make the payment. I don't want to use a credit card.

On another note i was wondering how the server is hosted is it dedicated with a hosting company or a server on the OcUK side?

What have i missed!

lol cmon guys this is a community server! the last pages have been people moaning cause the servers down or complaining, Minecraft has been buggy the last couple of days but that's what you get from a beta! if you dont like it that you lost 20mins of work dont blame it on admin. U guys are risking whindle taking down the server for good, it's like 5 year olds moaning cause someone nicked their candy.

It's hosted by Multiplay which isn't a dedicated server as it is probably running other servers off it aswell. The same thing happened to my old server, world was probably a bit bigger than the ocuk one and the ram usage and cpu usage went through the roof so we moved to a dedicated server and it was soooo much better. No more block lag, tnt lag, crashes. It costs more but it can handle a lot more stuff and more people.

reason i asked is that i have 2 servers sitting up in my office and i was thinking of using one of them. I also have 2 websites of my own. but cant find out how to set that up?

You won't be able to run a server from webhosting seller. There is probably some simple threads about making your own minecraft dedicated server on the minecraft forums. Moving the world would be one of the main issues I imagine the file is extremely large now.

ah i have a dedicated server on a webhosting site.

so now way to get the the server to be online other then a set server in my house. will look into that then. just wondering since OcUK is offline was looking for something to do while i wait

oh any idea on bandwidth use for MC?

whatever happened to the idea of moving the server/map over to the linktart dedi?

wouldn't that help with the mods/bbhere problems cause you could use whatever version of the mods you need instead of MP's one?

Well you may get away with it on a dedicated webhost but I think they would notice and shut you down lol. On front of bandwidth it uses a lot more than you think. If you have say 30 people on and staying in sameish area it would be like 80ish KB/s. Then you have to take into account people connecting will use a fair bit. Everyone who joins will have to 'download' the map and enough of a connection that it don't eat into the other plays bandwidth when someone else joins. Not entirely sure what it would total as as it will be up and down quite a bit.

hmm i see well the webhosting company is not an issue i know the CEO of the company so may get something agreed to.

will have to see if i can find out bandwidth info or a proper ball park figures

Windle/Garsands decided to keep the hosting at multiplay for some reason. I'm not sure what the reasoning was, though I guess it was maybe something to do with not wanting the hassle of trying to move things over (which is fair enough).

People seem to be playing on LinkTart.co.uk atm (check the dynmap: http://linktart.co.uk:8123). It'd be good to see a few more on there, just to check that the server can deal with it, though as we recently upgraded the server massively I seriously doubt it'll struggle :)

Can someone explain why the server is down please? Other than "the server will be down for a while" and "windle has taken the server offline".

If you want people to donate, a reason why its down would be nice... Especially for the people who have donated. I mean it's saturday/sunday, the main time when people want to play...

How about:

2 servers, f2p and p2p.

The f2p is run like it is now, white listed, but with a higher post count/membership length (Unless vouched for by someone above the require post count/membership length)

To play on the p2p one, you pay a quid a month, but paid in one lump sum of 12 quid for a year.

Not only will this maybe stop greifers, it will help with the running costs, lower the actual demand on the server as less people will be using it :)

Just an idea I thought of while reading the thread :)

And Gar and Windle, you run a great server that I am sure everyone is really appreciative of, but as im sure you know, when you can't get on to play your favourite game it can be annoying :)

Think some people forget that Admins are people who pay actual money for you to have somewhere to play, lets all just chill out and set fire to things? :p

The server is down whilst I figure out what is happening.

As people seem to be ok with the idea of paying for a server then that's great. The difficulty will be setting the monthly payments at a level that means griefers won't be willing to pay it but aren't too steep. Extra payments from members also opens up opportunities to take extra guaranteed CPU/RAM usage from Multiplay which should increase the servers power and remove the lag issue.

Regards moderators, I'm open to suggestions on who would be a good moderator. They would be expected to intervent in player disputes, uphold the server rules and handle generating the cartograph. They would also have access to the server logs and be able to backup/restart the server as required.

agreed, it's pretty unfair to take the server offline without an explanation!!

if it's because ppl are complaining about griefing, then just post a "warning" that there maybe griefers on the server to be aware of, and to keep an eye out for. But dont just take the server offline which is unfair for everyone else and give griefers the upper hand.

if you start putting a fee out then im out, why should ppl who dont cause problems have to pay this is ridiculous and will spoil the community that do play.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get it on frenchtart's dedi?

If the players wish to switch to FTs then again, it's an option. Monies gathered could go to increasing server capacity or perhaps keeping a seperate free 2 play server going for people who don't want to/can't pay a monthly fee.

On another note the server is back up and running

I'm happy for you to have full admin on the server if you want to go this route - email me sometime if you want to discuss it :)
