It's 64 blocks high, and yes you can make the height limit over a thousand with a mod, can't remember what it's called though.

Ah right is the MP server set to 64? been playing with the mc structure planner and didnt know about the 64block height

I beleive so, but from bedrock level the height is 128

64 from sea level you can dig down another 70 ish then build up
