OcUK Photo Comp - Season Five : Round Six - "Motion" DISCUSSION

does anyone think that adding 'originality' to the marking criteria is a good idea?

Also think that if the competition was an open vote (ie all forum users could vote on thier top 3 - and all were marked blind (ie no username id) I think it would be much better.....seen it work very well on other photog comps...also means that the competition is more open as using just a few judges makes the results very subjective...just an idea anyway.

One big big problem with that. Asides from the best images there no one else gets any votes. I have seen decent enough images entered and then get no votes at all. Not because they are bad pics but because the system makes its so.

Its very discouraging for newbies to enter if they get 0 votes every round.

In short, we have our way, "they" have their way.

We already include originality in the Theme scores...

* Theme Relevance ( 1 - 10 )

+ Good interpretation of the theme
+ Originality

/ Your photograph should represent the theme without further commentary.

As for making the comp like the other forum, it is best to keep it as it is. Amazing how this topic comes up every so often. This one and the 'why do we have to have the border rule?' :p

The problem is that nothing is original anymore, all technique/style even subjects people used would have been done already by the pros. So on that level everyone gets 0 on originality. What you can judge on is the execution of the idea and how well that execution is.

dear ohh dear

so are you tell me that in the last 120 years every idea and artistic concept has been photographed....open your eyes raymond. ;)

Yes. When there is a new technique, you bet you ass you are not the first one to try it. When there is a subject, it won't be the first ever one. It's not a bad thing, it's just reality.

It gives us something to be pedantic about ;)

Just a note to let you all know I'm back and judging... I'll post some holiday snaps later but I'll do the marking first :)

Good stuff, welcome back :) (just realised your from wickford! )

Ok, all done - I've sent the results in to Xolotl who's standing in for me as the announcer judge for this round :)

Now to have a look through the holiday snaps!

I've started, and will probably finish tonight/tomorrow morning. I'm finding it quite hard to judge this time though
