OCUK programming project?

I predict it will either not get off the ground or fail part way in. Start with something simple so you can at least see who is *really* up for this or those that are just throwing their hat in the ring because they are bored at that moment in time.

Imo a game is too much for a starter project and you will find one or two people will end up with too much work.

Start simple and with java or c# - loads of example projects everywhere, decent ides for free and seriously easy to get to grips with.

Just my opinion ;) gl!

It's a good argument - I think (well hope) that the strategy game in PhP/JSP will actually get a lot of interest and time from us (as it's easy peasy). But at the same time there's a clear desire to develop a game, and it seams those though do have some experience want a project that'll push them a little

I think you've got to be very careful with the scope of this though.
I think we need to do something very simple to start of with, this could still be a game but if we start trying to build something with an intricate plot/AI/fancy graphics then it will be over before it really starts as Golsky says.

I think we should try to develop something simple that we can do end to end reasonably quickly.
Those that are still there at the end of that project will become the core team for something else a bit more advanced.

Another idea could be to do something like Bomberman. You could use networking to make it multiplayer (keep it human players only.) It's a pretty simple concept and you could have something that people can see working pretty quickly and then add features (different types of bombs etc.) once the main structure is in place.

I still think we should use XNA too ;)

Thats why I suggested something like a CS for linux, trying to come up with a game with a plot and things is difficult but a multi player game doesn't need this, but are more complex because of the networking :p
Depends on your focus, programming or general game making lol

Would agree with this, start simple and work our way up. However, I'll be happy to try my hand at anything.

Okay a quick update of how we're going about this.

We're looking at the idea of having two groups, one to work on a web application (probably PhP based) where characters can trade, interact etc... which is really quite easy. So we'd like some PhP people to volunteer to help out on this, there's a couple of us with some experience that can help you out if your new to programming.

Interlinked with that is the "proper" game angle an FPS programmed with C++ that those that want a challenge can get stuck into.

We like the idea of the too being linked so what you do in the basic PhP game influences what happens in the FPS and vice versa.

So this is a bit of a shout out get all those interested in here. if you could post your name, languages your experienced with and whether you cam commit to this (and when you can) then we can get a decent idea of how must support we have.

Thanks again all for posting!

The general idea we came up with for the whole project is:
A FPS game where you have a character that gains experience as you kill things (other players / monsters) and perform jobs / quests. You also acquire loot and items and money from these, which can be used to trade with other characters / buy things. So that element is like a RPG FPS (or a FRPS!).
Then the web element of the game is a online market place for the items you have gathered where you can put items up for trade / sale on the website and other people can purchase them, or trade for them. You can also manage your characters from this website, setup guilds / clans perhaps.
The exact feature list is not yet generated but is being worked on!

Languages: PHP, CSS, HTML, MySQL
Available: Most evenings

Languages: c++, html, css
Available: at the moment evenings and days from june 4th. If I get a job then evenings only.

Email in trust :)

Why are you wanting to use PHP/JSP to program a game? The languages aren't really oriented towards such a purpose.

XNA, C variants and even Java are going to be much better for the purpose.

You should make a game focussed on multi-player too, as it's hugely important for keeping the community active and interested.

Hi Kreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I think we're going with C++ for the FPS element (/strand) PhP and JSP are for the trading / interaction part. So have a look at Cybernations which is a strategy game with no graphics element - now imagine that interacting with an FPS and I think you'll see where we are going :)

This was what I was referring to in my post, but it seems you didn't actually mean that :p

Well, I've got a vBulletin license which is unused if you want a community for it if someone else pays for the domain and hosting. Or, we could get a fund together and all chip in. If one of the project leaders PMs me.

Anyway, I'm up for setting up a board, even hosting it if no one else is up for it and I'd be interested to try my skills at something web related. I'd like to move on from XHTML/CSS to something more dynamic. Forgot to mention I'm also happy to learn something new such as C ect.

EDIT again: Can host it if they will change the name for me which they probably would.
