OCUK programming project?

Okay, so, with C++ we have libraries like Irrlicht, Crystal Space, Ogre3D, SDL and such to work with most of which are reasonably easy to use, but also fairly powerful and portable libraries. The main problem here is the unmanaged code and the fact that we would have a lot of work on our hands just for choosing C++.

With C#, we'd probably be looking at using XNA, which is a very powerful library in its own rights, and the .NET libraries are also reasonably comprehensive. The problem here is portability, I mean there's mono, but Mono.XNA as far as I know isn't all that complete. Then there are other libraries like Irrlicht.NET which might be a reasonable cross-platform solution.

Then there's Java, I'm not sure about the state of play of games dev in Java. There's Java3D but I've never looked into it personally. Obviously we have the benefit of Java being fairly portable in a 'write once, test everywhere' manner. There's also Jirr, which is a Java port of the Irrlicht library.

Personally I'm totally baffled as to what we should choose. I'd be inclined to say Java if portability were a priority and were confident about Java3D, but as I mentioned, I haven't got a clue about it!

Well, I said interesting in learning anything but I can help website in XHTML/CSS also I can admin vBulletin and style it reasonably well if my offer is accepted.

I am ok with PHP/Python and anything Linux. I also have a server in BlueSquare which we could use for hosting.

I've already agreed to help out with some stuff, but haven't specified what I can do.

C# & VB.NET are my main skills as that's what I do as my day job - primarily Win Forms, but experienced in ASP.NET too.
Also good with databases Oracle, MS SQL & Sybase mainly.

Have dabbled with Java in the past and have done little bits of C & C++ though I'm by no means an expert in these and it's been a while since I touched them.
Would be good to pick up some new skills in this area though.

I also have some experience in team leading and project management of small things (nothing more than around 30 man days really), though any dedicated PMs will no doubt be a lot better at that side of things than I am!

:D:D

I suddenly have a vision of what the FPS could be - it's set in a nuclear wasteland filled with homosexual president Lincolns. The further you get into the game, the less they wear and the more outrageous their weapons are.

I can already see the 'Game of the year' edition of the website. ;)

This sounds interesting. Would be willing to help out if I can.

At uni studied games programming and used C++, C# with XNA, Java and at college used VB. Quite rusty now though as its been a while since I've done any real programming.

I'd be interested in helping out on the admin side. That is, managing the Wiki, setting up and maintaining a Jabber server, providing hosting, maintaining and hosting a SVN codebase, etcetera etcetera!

Can we have a 'Utilities' team? I like coding little apps that help do stupid things. As an example, an app that allows 'quick switching' of IPs and networks. This is useful for those that work 'in the field' - i.e. visit client sites and constantly need to change their IP addresses.

Sorry if that's over complicating it any - but I can dedicate an hour or so every day to coding little apps like that, but I don't think I'd have enough time to help code on a huge project. I can code in any language (short of Assembly ;)), given a few days to pick it up :) Code in Java and CSharp primarily, though have used Python, Perl, Ruby, XHTML, CSS, PHP, SQL etc in the past.

I am only starting c++ next year so I wont be much use. Its a shame as I would have liked to help! Will I be able to look at the source code as I could learn from it once it is underway?
Im going to get involved with the c++ stuff as well. If you want to add me on msn (look in my trust), we could work together on it.
I assume your going to be doing c++ at uni? I'v done a couple of c++ modules at uni and i could try and point you towards using techniqes that you'll be learning later.

Mabe we could stick up an editable Google spreadsheet where people can list their skills etc? I actually cover the following but just didn't list them originally :p:

C, C++, C#, Java (albeit rusty), PHP, VB, SQL, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript

edit: I'm awful at designing (graphics that is), so I probably wouldn't want to do arts. Give me a design and I'll hapily work it in Photoshop, but the ideas aren't my strong point :).
