OCUK programming project?

Thought you might want to fill in your spreadsheet ;)

Of those, I do C#, PHP, 'SQL', MySQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript very comfortably. I'm also pretty fluent in the XML stuff such as XSLT and XPath, as well as XML DOM bits and pieces. I also have a fair bit of experience with MSBuild, NAnt, JQuery, Gallio, MSTest (yuck), NUnit, etc. - basically a load of peripheral .net libraries and all sorts. I used to be a full-time PHP developer but I'm a couple of years out of touch so the libraries and frameworks have probably moved on.

OO architecture and design is my thing, as well as web stuff, but I'd like to gain some new skills, particularly in some of the newer languages such as Ruby and Python. I'm also happy to do but reasonably new to C, C++ and Java.

Agreed - we really need somewhere we can discuss and log our ideas and conversation with some structure. A forum would be ideal for this purpose.

Come on, web development team! :D
You dont need a web developement team to set up a forum :p Did someone say they had a license for forum software? If so, find someone with some decent hosting and get it set up :D

just to say:

I do 3d modeling and games design at uni. So I'm game for anything design side (have done 2 game design modules now :) )

Especially now I've just finished uni for the summer!

imo a forum is essential. But also an irc type thing aswell as its just easier to get ideas over quickly etc and have a chat. I spose you nifty web dev's can implement something aye ;) ?

Or we COULD go down the source engine(or do you need to for steamworks?) route (apply for steamworks(achievements, stats etc etc for the game, game appearing in steam store etc) but I spose that would come later :P

Blackvault, you've put me down for the web side but I'd really like to be involved in the fps side. I'm starting a computer games development masters at abertay in september so I think it would be really good experience for me. I'm sure I won't have as much experience with c++ as some of the others but I'm academic and hard working!

Might be interested in this once my University exams are over... I'm working during the summer but I don't mind spending a little bit of time but I doubt my contribution would be as big as some others here.

Currently I have some experience in C/C++/Java/Assembler... I wouldn't say that I'm at a good enough level to do too much in these but have studied them in parts at undergraduate level and have in the past been happy to teach myself other bits and bobs when needed.

I have no experience in web-based stuff but would be happy to try it out... Have to give it a go at sometime, right?

For now, I'll monitor this thread and activities in general and will make more formal communication once I'm in a position to contribute further :)

Cheers.

EDIT: A severe limitation for me may be the spec of my PC (AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (~2.2GHz), 512MB RAM, GeForce FX 5600) which appears to struggle with even the most basic of games (Not usually a problem considering I'm not much of a gamer!).

I've taken it upon myself to start the ball rolling on the organisation of the admin side... let me know if I've overstepped the mark :o

God bless Fantastico :D

I've got admin login details for all of the above. Can we set up a 'management team' so we can share the details, and start editing/configuring the above if the group agree their use :)

If the above starts getting used, I'll happily pay for a small hosting package for a year and buy the domain name to keep everything separate from my crap :)

I'll look into getting the Jabber server (for those that haven't used it before, it's MSN/IM for groups/teams) and a SVN codebase sorted.

(Oh, for some reason over the past 10 mins my hosting has started to crawl, I've fired off an e-mail to find out why - bare with it in the meantime!)

A severe benefit more like. Having people with older hardware means we A: Have a base line hardware specification to aim at (the game should run at least on this at x settings) and B: Have people without stupendously powerful hardware to test it with (i.e. a large amount of gamers).

Also I think we need to get as many people on the FPS team as possible as a large body of the work is there.

I'm interested. I'm into XHTML/CSS and currently learning PHP/MySQL.

Would be nice to get some hands on experience.

An IRC is a good idea in my opinion.

I hope that throwing ideas into the mix at this stage isn't considered a little too negative, but considering the scope of the project a little further after re-reading the thread I've come up with a possible suggestion.

Check out Introversion games... They are all relatively basic (They even run on my PC) and I can imagine a lot of them being relatively easy to code - Or at least can begin life as a small project from which they can grow.

The idea of having a seperate web team is still very possible as items can still be traded. Using the hacker-sim idea, for example, gamers could trade hardware/software... And the multiplayer aspect is available in games such as Defcon and Multiwinia.

I'm sure there are other dev groups around that do suitable games but these guys came into thought when I considered their small dev team... I just cannot help but think if we can come up with an idea on a similar scale it would be both interesting but have great scope.

RE: the skills list, I didn't list all of mine either as thought it would have been overkill, but after looking at other peoples lists mine doesn't seem quite as big!

I'm just coming to the end of my Software Engineering degree, and have used Java, C, C++, C#, VB.NET, VB, Haskell, SQL.

I've also done a years placement in industry, developing in BCPL, which is a practically defunct language now but it's the father of the C language :)

Wow this thread has really advanced since I last looked! Like I said i have exams now but i am up for it after the 1st June, can't wait!

Oh and also if it helps I've made a text based game in java before lol! Also tinkered with a MMORPG game server in C++ previously..

Surely a forum would be better.

Ah, seems we both did :p I had a spare domain, hosting package and vB license so set this up:

http://forums.zorev.com/

vBulletin or phpBB3?

Maybe we can work together and get something done?

One other thing that I think needs to be sorted early on, is if OcUK/Spie are happy to let us associate ourselves with them. If not - would they allow us to actively recruit members from the forums for this programming project(s), whilst ensuring our name bares no relation to OcUK (maybe even adding a disclaimer?).

vBulletin every day of the week :D But then you already knew that :p

Would be great to work together on this sort of stuff - drop me an e-mail and we'll talk over details :)

Quick questions: do you have Fantastico so you can replicate the structure I've setup? And/or is the spare domain you speak of zorev? :)

What is your email address?

And no, I have Installatron which is similar but a few different programs. We get MediaWiki instead ect. Which, we could make a single login with a bridge. Not sure how to with Tiki if that is your preference though. Yeah, the spare is Zorev.
