Must admit im toying with the idea of having a punt on the 5800x3d as long as its compatible with my motherboard

Edit: it is compatible with the latest beta bios
 
Excellent results all in all, but I think in the end it's still not enough for me. It's not a convincing option over Alder-Lake (which in turn wasn't that convincing over Zen 3, and it in turn wasn't strong enough just by itself) and for the most relevant results in games where I do actually need extra fps (f.ex. CP2077 +RT), there's much more that's needed still. I think I'll probably still wait to see what Zen 4 brings to the table because that will also likely have 2 other CPU gens where I can, on AM5, upgrade from. Though I dare not think of the cost.

I weigh the results for a CPU as [70% - 120 fps avg, 15% - 120 fps 1% pct, 10% - 120 fps 2% pct, 5% - 120 fps 5% pct], particularly in open world games with RT (too bad I can't find solid WD:L results w/ RT). In games where CPUs achieve more than that it's honestly irrelevant to me and I don't take it into consideration. I think for CP2077 in particular even Zen 4 might not quite hit those marks.

It depends on the games,and in some which are massively CPU bound even at normal resolutions the peformance increases can be massive.

It will be interesting to see if the Bethesda Creation Engine based games see any real improvement.

The same goes with application performance. I use DxO Photolab and there isn't a huge jump in performance,but with Lightroom the jump in performance core for core is noticeable.

Pretty impressive showing, and at £419 it's actually a sensible price vs. the 12700K(F), if you are a gamer for most of the time, and on an AM4 system there seems little point in moving away, if you aren't waiting for a full platform upgrade that is.

If you do any productivity type work, I think it is fairly clear that a 5900X or 5950X is better value right now (at least, at OCUK with the discounted prices). If gaming is a secondary priority I'd still get a 5900X or 5950X, because they won't meaningfully bottleneck a high-end card. But, if gaming is the priority, the 5800X3D is the fastest AM4 CPU, no question.

Spot on with your summary there and I agree wholeheartedly.

5800X3D for me as I only want the best gaming performance. I don’t do anything else other than use a browser and some Office 365 usage.
 
5800x3d is also enough for many productivity workload, unless you are doing something with hollywood type budget. No problem with photo or video editing for example,8 core is enough, ram, ssd and gpu are more important. Laptops had 8 cores max till ADL, and it was used for serious work.

Yeah, that's my current thinking. I do a bit of video editing, but only as a hobby for now. So I doubt I'd appreciate the faster workload.
 
The 5800x3D is a very impressive refresh. It's great for marketing because people seem to buy their low and mid range hardware from the team with the fastest high end.

I don't understand why anyone would actually buy it though when the 5800X is £100 cheaper. The 5800X has mind blowing performance.

I just don't understand the obsession with having the fastest. I've always had such amazing fun playing games on mid range hardware. I'm an enthusiast myself by the way, I absolutely love hardware. But it doesn't need to be the fastest for me. I'm enthusiastic about all hardware.
