OcUK Ryzen 9 3950X review thread

I decided to just drop the 3950x on to the X470 Taichi Ultimate until I can source an X570 board that isn't massively overpriced. Everything seems to be running fine, and I have it configured with 64GB of Micron E-Die Ballistix RAM (4x 16GB), only at 3600MHz C16 currently.

I'll get more time to play with it once I get sometime off over the festive period, but for now it is just sat running two VM's which would probably be fine on 4c/4t CPU :D
3600 @ CL16 sounds good enough, what timings?

Not near it now, but if I recall it was 16-19-16-16- and I think 38. I've not got time to mess around with it and check stability right now though, will wait until the weekend.
I see, I've tried that combination but got errors with memtest.. dropped to 16-19-18-18 but yet to run a full test to see, let me know how's the stability :)

I have a feeling it isn't stable, but I was just giving it a quick blast. I'll probably end up dropping the volts back from 1.48v to something more sensible like 1.42v.

What RAM have you got? I realise the binning will be different, but my 3960X did 3600 at 16,16,16,36 1T @ 1.35v out of the box, so with some tweaking you should get there if it's decent B-die.

Already said on the previous page,

Well excuuuuse me for not checking through 9 mansized pages to see whether you'd posted already. :p

is el cheapo Micron E-Die Ballistix, I think the 64GB cost around £180 all in.

Not bad at all for the money. I'm simultaneously sad and happy that RAM's coming down so. I paid near £500 for 32GB of 8Pack stuff a while back. Ideally I need to pass it on to my lad for his rig (8700K) and buy 64 or, ideally, 128GB but I just can't justify it yet... Yet. Have you tried the Ryzen RAM calculator? I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

That must a huge difference, do you play any games?
Best overkill pc and upgrade i have ever done. Now finally I can run the 2 Vega 56's i have without being bottlenecked.

CB20 on the c2q was around 820 and takes ages to run, the 3950x did 10132 and runs stupidly fast, and i know i can push it more.

If i am honest, the c2q for the games i was playing was ok with my 680gtx. The problems started when i got a 970, and the first Vega where i didnt see much difference between the 680 and 970 and even worse to the vega which i was also dropping frames. World of warcraft before was running 60fps, and with the vega was going from 10 to 100 but mostly in the low 30..

Games i am trying to figure out which support xfire so i can play them on the 4k tv i have, I kept the expansions of the witcher 3 to play like this and about to go give it a try.

At some point I plan to tighten and oc the ram and try to up the FCLK but i dont see for now a need for it apart from more benches :P

Did you lot take note of your week numbers? Mine is 44, which was the last week of October, but it had been in the stock room for quite a while. Anyone get a newer one?

Had to wait for the thermal compound, and the silicon to set. Nah joke'in

I reckon there was more reviewer samples, compared to retail available when they went to press. Hence why they may have moved release date back.

Very high end new arch chip you guys got. I think AMD's 7nm process will be looked back in the future - as a milestone.

It was only back in the 7970Ghz era that AMD were out in front of the gfx card market. Well.......that's what I remember of it anyway. Maybe it was bang for buck.

But new, high end R9 CPU's and threadripper have demonstrated a step change in CPU power vs affordability. Hats off to AMD.

you went from 4 cores to 16? jesus..
Yep 11 years in the making that desktop pc :P. Cost a fortune and starting to get buyers remorse.

The c2q wasn't doing very well at 1080p with the Vega but surpisingly at 4k because the Vega is the bottleneck i was getting the same fps that i get now. Albeit now i can run both gpus for some reason it wouldn't see the second one in my old p5q deluxe mobo, and Witcher 3 on 4k cpu utilization is like 2% on the 3950x lol.

Just for the heck of it Witcher 3 all maxed out, no hairworks though, was 42ish fps on one card and 68ish on both cards. And there comes the dissappointment of xfire, not many games support it, and i am banging my head on the wall that i didnt get the 1080ti when i had the chance and not get the vegas.

God though power usage with the 2 Vegas was stupid. I haven't tweeked them yet so they were running i think 260watts each or more...

On the 3950x side of things I saw 4725Mhz on 1st core and 4700Mhz on core 3 i think but they were really breaf. I want to run a single core CB but the max i saw it going with PBO was 4.48ghz i think. Should i set a manual overclock just on one core and how much juice should i put in it?

Lastly i think i have a problem with my PSU, HX1000W bought last year on xmas from elsewhere but put it now on a pc sigh. I hear a chirping noise but only when something big happens, like CB is running, or a game. Once those are stopped then the chirping stops. I think its the fan and worried that i will need to rma it.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Right I have around 40-50 units arriving next week from official sources, which means we make our 8-10% margin.

By the end of the month I have sourced an addition 200 units, the bad news these are not from official sourcing and the price I have paid is essentially the price we are selling for now.

This means all pre-orders shall be cleared by end of this year, those who have pre-orders with us shall be honoured and the pre-order price shall be maintained whilst we are displaying pre-order, however once the stock has landed I am confident OcUK shall be the only stockist in UK and potentially Europe as we've done an amazing job with clearing back orders, once the 40-50 land next week we would have shipped well over 100 plus units. Then the additional 200 land!

So what I am saying!

If you want a 3950X at MSRP and want it within a month you need to pre-order with OcUK NOW and you will get one, that is our promise!
Once we are showing in stock, our price shall increase because stock is king and were also not a charity, were here to make money and selling the latest flagship CPU for what it cost us to buy is total stupidity, so no whinging and crying when we show in stock and our price goes £800 plus.

CONSIDER THIS A WARNING AND A HEADS UP!

No other re-seller in the world will give you this clarity into our business and operations, so I hope its appreciated. :)

@Gibbo you can't say fairer than that. Yet another example of why OcUK leads the way in customer service (imo). Hopefully that'll allow everyone who wanted one to get their builds sorted over the Christmas period. :)

Ordered one.

Gibbo said that after the 20 they got this week they had around 40 orders left so hopefully if they get 50 in we might get them next week.
