OCUK Safe Space

I’m surprised that this thread took so long to degenerate

There’s only really two positions to take-

1) go over to mumsnet or just switch off your computer if you’re a sensitive *********
2) let’s just be a little bit nicer to each other for a change

People have been saying the latter for at least 2000 years since we nailed a chap to a tree for suggesting it, so it ain’t going to happen.

Me, I’d advocate switching off the internet entirely and outlawing any form of social media. This would force us to go back to being nasty to each other the old-fashioned analogue ways. Until then, you can’t really regulate human nature, and a good % of us are *****s.

To be fair I give SC a wide birth also it's full of pretentious kids pretending they know what they are talking about.

I'm sure 2 or 3 very vocal posters in SC have 'xenophobia' and 'racist' hotkeys they use the words so much. Not to forget when they disagree with a certain poster they then proceed to shout 'dowie hole' rather than debate the points being made.

They've literally been consumed with incoherent rage for 5 years now, incredibly sad. I assume they have nothing else in their lives. So yes, a safe space where they can at least find a couple of other people that are also suffering with the real world.

Bless, it really makes me laugh when I see people being so disparaging towards SC, especially when its people who are frequent posters in there themselves

So, not too different to GD with the vocal posters who have 'woke' and 'SJW' on their macro then :p

Don't forget the grammar Nazi mode that they enable when losing a debate.

Sometimes SC can be quite interesting, it's just when the toxic crap spreads from 'that particular thread' that is causes issues and ruins other threads. They can't help themselves though and for the mods it must be like herding cats trying to keep them contained in it where they can rage and whine to their hearts content.

For all its faults it's still a far more interesting place to peruse for me than reading the usual dregs whining in GD about why you cant throw bananas at black people anymore.

I've not seen one of those threads for a while lol :D
Not like the bad old days here though, it would probably be frowned upon now (rightly)

You sound bitter, perhaps you need to improve your debating skills?

My debating skills are just fine thank you, why would I be bitter? My life's going very well. Sometimes it's good to pop in and see the trainwrecks though.

When I returned to this forum after a few years 'off' I was staggered by how negative and argumentative it was. Either it has got worse or I had just got used to it when I was first here. Either are bad.

Already in this thread there are quite a few unnecessary comments. I am not talking about people being oversensitive, but actually unnecessary, defensive or accusatory comments.

If this were to happen it would have to be a subforum rather than a single thread. But there would have to be some kind of consensus that it would be a useful thing which would benefit the community and that that usefulness would outweigh the extra moderation. One might see a lot of lurkers coming out the woodwork who wouldn't normally post. Or it could exist on a trial basis [and not necessarily called "Safe Space" but something else].

I have to say though, this place is a classic for defensive comments. The amount of times I see accusations of whataboutisms, strawmans, citation arguments, God knows what else is too many to count. As an example, there was that thread a few days ago where two posters fought for several pages over an apostrophe.

I get it that people love their jokes and playing around, that's absolutely fine, me too, but it's all too common for some poster to come along very quickly and ruin the fun and for the thread to turn into a fight.

It often stems from people (probably a few of the recent posters in here) who post their opinion as fact then go on the back foot/have a hissy fit when asked to back up their opinion. Nobody is wrong any more, especially when it comes to opinions.

Tbh I've always considered, rightly or wrongly, the mental health thread to be a bit of a 'safe space' and that seems to work ok as it is a serious subject.
There will always be people who only treat the forum as somewhere to troll or argue though, and I find it difficult to believe they are like that in real life, or at least I hope not.
