OcUK Threadripper 2 review thread

And is not the only one. Hardware Unboxed for example, the guy cannot be given some faster ram to test for heaven sake.
His today video has 2990WX vs 7980XE using 3000Mhz and 3200n mhz ram respectively -_-.
While we saw from elsewhere 3600mhz works fine with the TR2 adding performance even compared to 3400mhz.

To be fair those frequencies quite well represent what's possible on most configs without the need for additional tuning. 3400-3600 no TR4 can require some work. Always good to go a couple of notches down from the maximum supported ratio.

They could have used 4000 ratio on X299, but they didn't.

I don't disagree. The reviewers should push the systems on their reviews as it was like that up to several years ago.
Until everyone started their own youtube channel going the easy route just plug some ram, run the benches, be a clown to entertain people and get money from Patreon and ads.

If I had their access to hardware I could have done with no ads or other patreon etc needed. Just for the sake in the side of overclocking enthusiasts.
Otherwise give the gear to Buildzoid, I bet he would do much better job.

While I was browsing youtube, what strike me was that Jay2Cents didn't had any Threadripper video today, but a video about his daughter.
Surprisingly according to AMD his audience is not for the HEDT market. :p

Aka, all the pro Nvidia and pro Intel content in his site came to roost.
Didn't stop them sending one to LTT though did it.

My current favourite tech YouTubers is Wendal at LevelOne Techs, that guy really knows his stuff I would love to get his analysis and thoughts on the 2990 WX and what it means for the indusry.

Could you give me link of Wendal's channel please?

I agree, that is why my first source these days is the german site. They run always extensive tests. Like those HDR vs SDR perf and DX12 vs 11.
Or that Monster Hunt game that tested 20 or so GPUs with their latest drivers, some of which were ancient like R9 390 etc.

So true. I use to watch a few of these YouTubers. Then realised they just have that personality that lets them come across well. In actual fact their content and quality is pretty low and I can get more info quicker elsewhere without having to listen to them.

That aside, they have done well for themseleves so I congratulate them on that.

I finally got to the point where I blocked Linus Tech from my youtube viewing. Went from amusing, to daft, to BANHAMMER BLOCK time.

Here you go https://www.youtube.com/user/teksyndicate

I've just realised the link says 'teksyndicate', I heard there was some sort of falling out between the owners of 'teksyndicate' some time ago and they went there different ways.

Initial reports for my type of workflows, handbrake, premier pro etc are nothing to write home about. Really quite disappointing actually. 7980XE is walking over it in the tests that are relavent to me unless you're running a crazy number of simultaneous cpu intensive applications. I want my rig to beast the application I'm working in. I want the quickest render times possible and don't care about running winrar or 7Zip in the background at the same time.

Bet Intel are breathing a rather large sigh of relief.

If you see on the other thread, there is some issue with the Windows 10 requiring patching again....
On Linux 2990WX is 30%+ faster than Windows 10 on rendering etc. Premier Pro is down to adobe to sort out the application.

A great review video comparing 7960XE (16 core), 1950X, 2950X and 7900X which close to the price point of the AMD 16 cores.

You mean as long as the programs you use are not able to use the threads it's fine for Intel?

Sounds like swiss cheese thinking.
