OcUK Zen3 review thread

It's not the clear cut Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 victory I was expecting. AMD are very good at precisely matching the performance of the competition these days. Anyone might think a cartel was operating..!

@CAT-THE-FIFTH im 99% sure for 4k gamers on Zen2 zen 3 got nothing.

except in CPU bound games

I'll give you a good example in X4:Foundations my out going i7 (being replaced with Zen3, yes I know you said Zen2 btw but for context) I get about 50fps at the start whether I use 1080p or 4k Ultra the game is totally CPU bound for me and I'm 100% certain in this game you would see a Zen2 to 3 gain at 4k

I followed your logic @CAT-THE-FIFTH and opted for the 5900X est. delivery 6th Nov :)

hopefully Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed don't call it out for being a lemon vs. the 5800X :p
Looks to be even or slightly ahead in most games so it's certainly a good choice especially with the 4 extra cores which will come in handy in the future.

Yeah - cinebench is not really any indication of gaming performance. Ive learnt that lesson.

5600x loaded up into the system. ( 4133mhz DDR4 not tuned )
vs
2600x previously ( 3600mhz DDR4 tuned )

Catzilla @ 1080p running on vega 56.

This CPU is a beast. FPS might not have changed much but loading times are epic, and it runs well cool.
next.

21% speed increase.

I'd be interested to see what the memory sweet spot is CL14 3600 or higher frequencies with relaxed timings. I think you need the FSB:DRAM ratios at 1:1 though to push that FCLK (Infinity Fabric)

Unigine @ 1080p. 2600x vs 5600x not much movement in max fps, but look at the min FPS!!!

They are worlds apart. 9fps vs 40fps same card, same setting. And those dips happened a lot in the benchmark.
Big difference if it was a game.

Erm, last I checked that is not even meant to use CPU and is a GPU only bench? :p

Go try 3DMark and see what happens ;)

The most satisfying will be Cinebench though, that will show huge gains.

Can you do some 3d mark scores on it please.

What's up with TechPowerUp's review? That was the first I looked at and was like erm, wtf? Then started looking elsewhere and thought that is more like it :D

On the whole I am safe with my 3600 at 4.4GHz at 4K, but damn I am looking forward to one of you selling me a cheap 5900X on members market in 12-24 months as you start jumping to the new platform and Zen 4 :D

I recon a 5900X would last me no less than 5 years.

Decided to put off my purchase for a couple of weeks. Mainly to mull over which I want. The 5900x seems to outperform the 5950x in gaming but lose in productivity, so I may just go 5900x after all.
Second reason is I just had to dump loads of money into my car and can't afford it right now

Linus tech review shows a little bit on memory performance. With those speeds you'll surely get the most out of it.

There seems to be some memory problems with Zen3:
https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-zen-3-i..._source=twitter&utm_campaign=buffer-pcgamertw

AMD has confirmed that hitting 2,000MHz on the Infinity Fabric clock of Ryzen 5000 CPUs may not be as easy as first hoped. In fact you may not have any luck at all, which would mimic our own experience of trying to get a set of Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4-4000MHz RAM running for our Ryzen 9 5900X review. To be clear the memory worked just fine, but any attempts at running the FCLK above 1,800MHz resulted in misery.

I reached out to AMD to see what was happening, and this was the response:

"We are working on additional optimizations for 1900-2000MHz fabric clocks in our next AGESA release. AMD cannot guarantee any samples, including your own, will be able to hit these speeds. Although some current Ryzen 5000 samples are able to achieve a 1900+ fabric speed we feel confident even more users will be able to obtain these speeds with the forthcoming optimizations. If you recall on the 3000 series many, but not all, users were able to achieve a fabric speed of 1900. We believe this will be a similar situation with 5000 series processors and 2000MHz."

Added to OP. Thanks!
