I quite like the simple uncluttered layout of the forums here. Some i go onto are a complete and utter mess. Custom avatars, sigs of all shapes and sizes and not to mention colours. A nightmare to read, particularly on a phone or tablet.
Indeed the uncluttered forums we have are great, IMO the design is too old school and needs refreshing, and as an experienced community manager on various forums with back-end PHP coding experience and front-end UI development I can honestly say that there is a lot you can do and add features like custom avatars, sigs and such without making it look cluttered.
I believe the intention of restricting the feature-set was probably to reduce stress and load on the web server/host and also keep the forum easy to maintain.
As stated above though, having someone to just give a simple refresh and maybe add a few tweaks here and there, and create a responsive layout to work on mobile devices would certainly help. If OCUK did decide on something, I would happily develop a basic prototype design on one of my servers, and if they chose to use it then they can have it free of charge. Although I'm sure that someone at OCUK is probably able to also put something together. But just another option.
As for the website, as a web developer and graphic designer, I really don't want to cast my personal thoughts, as I wouldn't want to offend anyone who was involved. However, I will state that to all the people that are slating the new design, it really isn't that bad, ok it could be a LOT better, and a complete rip of CK wasn't the best idea, but it is what it is. Some simple adjustments and a few tweaks here and there though and it really does have enough potential there. And to whom it was that made the decision to change it was right, it need updating, although maybe looking at current design trends would have helped first. Design trends are not a gimmick, they actually help sell your products and improve your customer base...proven fact.
Anyways enough rambling from me...as long as the company itself doesn't change its ways I'll remain a happy customer!
