Oculus Rift Dev ownership - My thoughts

I find myself having trouble readjusting to the real world afterwards and as you say the disconnect from the real world is disconcerting. I was playing Zombies on the holodeck round at my friends and he asked me did I want a beer and put his hand on my shoulder just as a zombie ran at me, I screamed so loud I woke the kids up.

lol :D I just know the cats would attack me just at wrong moment provoking a similar response!

I can't wait for this, just for War Thunder. I may actually never leave my room again other than to earn money for coke, pizza and electricity.

Ive Played it Audigex, im just not very good yet lol , the sense of being there is startling. Native support is already there in the engine, you might struggle a bit at a distance though with the res but for the feeling of sitting in a prop aeroplane its the best so far.

Rilot did you say you got unreal tournament working? Have you got any links? I could use that on my demo night. COuld you expand more on your experience?

I don't have any details on how to get it working. My mate had it already set up.
Aiming was done by looking at stuff with turning beyond head movement was with the gamepad/keyboard.
It was totally awesome though.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the dev kit unless you are an uber-geek and like to play with alpha software. It's not a case of plugging it in and having every game work. Only a very few work and those that do have control issues or other alpha software bugs.

The final OR hardware, coupled with the Leap Motion (clicky) is going to be utterly amazing.

This is coming true:

Excellent, I shall try and get UT working tonight, being a tech theres not much I cant get working so I dont mind having the dev version. The payoff when you get it working is wonderful.

Awesome, hopefully once we get a 1080p version it will be at least as usable as the standard monitor - I'll have to try to track down someone who has one and give it a go with a joystick.

Well, I just took the plunge and ordered mine.

I should probably wait... but I didn't. Should be with me some time next month.

I guess that gives me time to work out how to get things working with it etc.

If you need any pointers or help hit me up by PM, theres a lot you can do to improve image quality over the dumb as a box of rocks defaults. If you're a geek who loves tech you couldnt possibly not fall in love with it. I'm scouring the homebrew VR forums for the first person to be able to replace the LCD with a 1080p panel that works, but really its so amazing as is you wont care really, its just a ''nice to have'. plus a lot of the previously hacked support is coming in as native now, its really taking off.

I remember my first VR experience
I was 14 or 15 and played DN3D and first Quake on VR helmet for 2 hours.

I knew back then that this **** is future and i will have one.

WONT BE LONG NOW :D

Thanks goodl, appreciated.

I work in IT and do spend a lot of time tinkering with my PC. But it's always good to have someone to check ideas with. Something like this (in dev stage) even more so.

Exciting times.

I'll be ordering one soon, it comes with 4 months of Unity Pro subscription which I was planning on getting anyway ($75 USD a month for the subscription so it's basically a freebie).

Not a dev, but very tempted to get it so that I can say I was part of the start of the revolution

When I Googled to get the site to check prices, can't believe that there was side link on there to an eBay listing that had it at £1000....:eek::eek: 1 - it only costs £190 or so from the supplier and 2 - who would buy from there and not put the funds into developing what appears to be one of the next big things to happen to gaming ???? Unbelievable....

Don't think I can wait any longer, time to order a dev kit. Also can't wait for leap motion to come out either.

What can i say....been to have a try out on goodl occulus rift tonight....i was blown away...first demo he put on was a rollercoaster within castle walls....i wanted to get off before it go to the top lol ...when looking up down over your shoulder it was as if you where really there....had a go of half life 2....all i can say is its a different experience tha just using your monitor...i think future development is going to be great and the future is going to be VR for gaming imo.

Ha, I was about to post that picture.

I wonder how many years is it going to be till we put on goggles, gloves connect them to our smartphones and fully immerse into the world of virtual reality?

I wonder what the virtual UIs will look like. Are they going to be like in the movie Disclosure?

I really want one but have finally decided to hold off till the release model, if they can ship it at less than £250 with all the new bells and whistles I think it will do well.
I'll spend the time before release updaing to a new graphics card and getting some really decent headphones.

Last night I got Skyrim working on it, oh my god this is where it's at, a true next gen experience, the feeling of being there was palpable, only let down by the inventory management and interface which needs re-jigging for the oculus. I found a workaround so I could see my compass and do 80 percent of what I could normally do with the text based menus, but my god what a tiny price to pay for a near perfect immersion experience,
