Oculus Rift

Such a shame the vive isnt getting realsed till april now. There big advantage was being the first to market and now they might end up being the last. Plus all the financial issues that they have aswell.
Was really hoping to get one of those VR headsets for christmas for myself.

I reckon it'll be

March 2016 : CV1
April 2016: Vive

Gives more time to developers to get their games/projects sorted. I mean it would help having products to try with the new toys :D

Now rather glad i got the DK2 when i did. :D

Haven't really got VorpX working well tbh, fallout 3 yes, GTA V NEVER worked and that was the main reason I bought VorpX. I will try later.

Hrmm oh dear..guess i will hold off with vorpx for now then. Biggest problem for me when playing a VR first person game like Alien Isolation or Dying Light or Stanley Parable is the huge amounts of nausea i get unfortunately. (even though im maintaining 75 fps throughout no problems) Really hope the retail versions address this if possible.

I hope most stuff is cross-platform, devs seem to be porting a lot of things between headsets so it's definitely possible. Job Simulator just got announced for PSVR for example.

I think in my own personal environment (i.e. not perfect for VR!) the single camera of the Rift might be better, but I do wonder about the potentially superior tracking system of the Vive and the fact it is launching with touch controls and if that would be the best option, even if it means waiting a month.

The nausea will always be an issue with FPS games on VR. It's the lateral rotation that is the killer...guy at work gave a talk on work he'd done on a 3rd person camera for VR which seemed to be relatively nausea-free with a few tricks, so that kind of game could work.

Not too big a deal porting between systems...fundamentally they all plug in to an engine the same way. You need your two cameras for rendering, extra inputs for head tracking and motion controls. Distortion/CA etc is usually as simple as an extra shader pass.

From my experience, the Vive tracking isn't any better than the Rift, and you'll want 4-5m a side cube space to set it up in without fear of smashing yourself and everything around you to bits :)

@Surfer, don't get me wrong, it DOES work with GTA V etc, look up immersive gamer 87 on Youtube, he has hydra's, rift all working on gta v fine. Just quite fiddly.

Yeah getting things to work properly in the DK2 can be fiddly. Its the price we pay for being at the vanguard of cutting edge technology eh.

Palmer Luckey has been tweeting and has suggested that the cost of the CV1 is going to be higher than people have expected, even selling at cost. He goes as far as to say it will be a "reality check".

Sounds like the DKs were sold at quite a big loss.
