Oculus Rift

...and now he's suggested otherwise! That a Rift and suitable PC is in the $1500 bracket which was always expected and 1st gen users are basically being heavily subsidised by facebooks money.

I'll be happy if it's £500 or below.

Next year is going to be pricey....

Pascal card
Rift

Will make sure I've got at least 1.2k put away for it all :D

This is exactly as I fear.

I was contemplating upgrading to a 980Ti, but really given my rig it would have just been spoiling myself unnecessarily, especially when I should be waiting for Pascal.

The problem is when they both drop at the same time... ouch. The end goal is to get playing VR... hopefully not at 'whatever is the cost' haha.

Google alerts keep telling me Jan is for pre-orders.

Will they have regional distributors or will you have to buy from Oculus direct and get them shipped?

What happened with the DK2 as missed out on that.

£500 for me also. Having been pretty much glued to the DK2 since I got it a few weeks ago, I am proper looking forward to the CV1. Not sure what the big thing is with the Vive but hopefully will hear something soon on that as well before pre-ordering.

The DK2 cannot be ordered anymore, if you meant that. Some other sites may be selling them though.

@Nismo, Oh trust I do want one but depends on the price mate. I'm trying to say no but..

Not sure why its so expensive to build, the screen should be the most expensive part and that's a lower res than some phones.

I've decided that i'm going to wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation. I've tried both the DK2 and the Samsung VR with my Note 4. 1440p is still too low res for me. i can see the individual pixels too easily and i fine it difficult to not be distracted by them. i'll give it another go when we have VR helmets with 4k or even 6k screens

Bear in mind the screen in the CV1 is being custom made specifically for purpose so I'd be careful on drawing direct comparisons with any used on phones.

Anyone know how many CV1's are going to be released? I don't mind paying a high price if I know it could be sold with little or no loss. i.e If I get a few months testing out of it I will be happy to lose a small amount of money but not loads.

The DK1 I stuck on ebay after testing many games and programs and actually ended up making £90!

Glad I kept my 25gb library of Oculus games, programs, simulators and tech demos :)

FPS wise, I found that Quake 'Quake Spasm' mod was one that I could play with the DK2 without any motion sicksness at all. Richard Burns rally was another without motion sickness

We still don't have any information regarding numbers. Palmer did post that pre-orders wouldn't go live without warning, so it seems we'll get a heads-up in that regard. From Twitter:

Preorders are coming soon after new year. Enjoy a stress-free holiday, we won't launch preorders without warning!

The Vive is the same....a bit better than the DK2 but it's still very pixellated, like going back to the 90s. I'm going to hold out for second gen and sensibly priced GPUs that can drive the 90fps reliably...and the maturity of the developer scene.

I'm starting to think that AR like Hololens might be the more interesting tech...especially local multiplayer games, though at $3,000 for devkits it's going to be a while before they're affordable!

I've been watching more and more annoying screamy streamers (Markiplier, Pewdiepie etc etc, god they are ****ing annoying) simply to get some view on the VR stuff.

I'm mainly interested in it's use with Star Citizen/Elite Dangerous and a few driving games.

Is there a cheap/simple way I can 'sample' one?

I've done NO research into what's currently available but I'd likely go with the rift simply as they are deep into development.

Hmm, probably easiest/cheapest way to sample will be to go to a conference/expo, or maybe look for a local gamedev/gaming meetup group.

Not a lot of diff between Vive and Oculus in terms of experience, except the Vive has a larger area you can walk around in. Oculus SDK is pretty good now and I expect them to have the better support initially as their development kits have been easily obtainable for longer.

Elite Dangerous with a HOTAS setup on VR is incredible, the only 'killer app' for VR still imo, but it is fantastic. You can completely lose yourself in it.

Really excited to see what EVE: Valkyrie will be like.. Does anyone know when you think preorders will be available? Wasn't it supposed to be around nowish? ( i haven't been keeping up with this so apologies for the dumb question ;) )

I think it's going to be a launch title for the Oculus consumer version, possibly bundled with it...
