Oculus Rift

In no rush to be honest. They come out when they come out. When they do, I will buy them :D

Also, by the time Rift has a full launch, so will Vive anyway. In the mean time I will get my hands on Vive and enjoy that. I skipped DK1 and 2 as I wanted to fully enjoy the consumer version of a VR set, not long now
Not a bad strategy, but realize the 'early' Vive release is going to be limited. So definitely stay tuned into the release news so you dont miss out.

An HTC representative in Poland was making some pretty clear remarks that they'll be announcing price on Dec 8th and releasing headsets on the 15th. This isn't guaranteed confirmation, but it sounds pretty legit. So write this down on your calendar!

I tested a rift headset at a show recently running Elite Dangerous and it blew me away.

i see the release date has slipped for the retail headset so am tempted to get a dev kit, DK2 presumably, from the USA so I can use it for playing. Cost is around £200 so no big deal, is there any reason not to do so? Quite happy to pay again for a retail release later if its a lot better in some way.

Is there supposed to be a functional difference does anyone know between the dev kit and the retail kit, or is it just aesthetic?

The DK2 dev kit is significantly different from the retail kit. The retail kit is called the CV1 - go check out the spec differences, but mostly focus around changes on the display / lenses.

Be aware that many of the main-stream games have stopped official support for the DK2 at the moment (Assetto Corsa, Elite Dangerous) and any other games that cannot yet support direct mode.

Looks like my xmas present just died a death, that's a little disappointing..

I guess I wait for CV1 release then.

I assume there's nothing similar out there yet, a quick search reveals alternatives also looking to release next year.

There have been a few rumours of the Vive making it before Christmas, but that seems unlikely.

2016 is VR year, and you are wise to not bother with the DK2. Retail will be worth the wait.

Im actually gutted gutted, first time anything new really got me excited PC wise in a long time. I guess I'm just getting old..

Tried lots of VR gear over the years, and some of it was good but not enough to want it at home. Elite Dangerous and the Rift was awesome, sat in your ship/at your desk with a headset and headphones on seems like a perfect immersive experience.

End of first quarter 2016, shipping with an xbox controller, proper controller to follow later in the year.

Pre-orders should theoretically (very theoretically) be anytime after the next three weeks if they keep the same cycle as the dk2 (four weeks from sold out going up on website). Theyll want to get the preorders going before the Vive starts up so maybe.

It wont be long and yes, Elite is something else in the Rift :)

Doesnt work currently with 0.70 and I prefer the way DCS is booting up now (no extended mode) so dont want to rollback. Hopefully theyll have the expansion sorted in time for 1.0 so all should be good then.

Rift is shipping with the XO controller initially before it's touch controllers are ready, the Vive should have it's touch controllers and lighthouse system at launch.

Well I've stuck my DK2 up for sale now it seems the best time to sell with Oculus out of all there new stock, I'm thinking of taking the plunge on the Steam/htc VR over CV1 next as long as the screen is a big improvement over the DK2 i'll be happy, giving business to steam who never fail to provide good products.

What do you VR fans think of the idea of there being 2 versions of pc games in the future. A normal screen version and a VR version.

This has kinda already happened with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. In a previous version of the game you could play it in VR and it was one of the must have experiences in the DK2. However the developers patched this out...

Their reason is basically...they are going to be releasing an official VR version of the game in early 2016 so yeah there you go. Selling the same game twice.

Do you know of any other vgame studio that is doing the same ie will be developing 2 versions of pc games. (or a later VR version of a game already released instead of just patching it in)

Its interesting that a similar thing could have happened with Alien Isolation...they developers could have blocked the VR option in a later patch...they didnt luckily :)

If this represents a considerable investment of time and resources on their part then I wouldn't be opposed to purchasing the VR content as paid DLC, so long as it was reasonably priced.

I wouldn't buy a second copy of the game though just to get the VR content, as this seems like an unreasonable business model to me.

I hope this isn't the start of a trend?

Depends if it is a proper redesign, new UI, gameplay tweaks etc...or just OVR support hacked in like Alien Isolation which was a pretty rough implementation.

If it was a proper implementation I wouldn't mind paying DLC price for it.

I suspect Oculus/Valve etc. are starting to wave money around to get some good launch titles lined up.

nope, wouldnt buy a game twice for VR.

I like the fact that some games will switch straight back to normal when disabling the OR, prefer this when I'm ingame and get tired/a headache maybe.

Absolutely wouldn't pay for this ability.

I imagine (hope) it's because VR is new, the HMDs are still in development, and they are adding new special support into an existing game (even though it is some kind of redux version for UE4?), this requires extra dev effort than normal so they are going for an additional cost.

maybe.

On another note I've recently discovered AirDrift. It hasn't been updated since Feb so I'm not sure it's being actively developed, or whether it works in the newer runtimes, but flying around through the using your head to steer is really impressive, particularly in the (paid) canyon level. Flying very close to the ground through narrow gaps for about 3 minutes in the time trial is quite intense
Even more impressive is that I don't feel sick at-all, even though other people have referred to it as vomit simulator.
I would like to see a multiplayer version though, e.g. racing against other people with 'weapons' to slow other people down using the touch controls when they arrive

I've got used to all of the motion sickness related with it now, first time I tried a flight sim I felt horrendous for about 6 hours afterwards.

Doesnt affect me in the slightest now, even doing aerobatics in the DCS hawk.

Thoughts on upgrading my rig to handle VR?

Option 1) Just upping from an i5 2400 to an i5-4690k and overclocking. Not sure how much of a difference this will make to be honest. When I factor selling off the old CPU and MB, i probably will only spend an extra £80 on that tops.

Option 2) Upping from a 970 to a 980 Ti. Considering the fact I can sell my 970 for probably 190 or something, that is still another good £300+ to drop (and I only have a 1080p 144z screen in the mean time).

Do we think the CPU upgrade will help at all? If it does, then I will do that, and just see how my 970 holds up. If not, then I will scrimp and save for the GPU upgrade.
