Oculus Rift

The HTC Vive should be out earlier and by all accounts is way ahead of the rift in every way, including no motion sickness from what they have been saying which really is a significant point.

Motion sickness is down to the design of the game/experience, as well as any fluctuation in framerate. Simply, if your head appears to move in VR space without your head moving, the vom starts coming.

If you've got a point of reference like a cockpit round you, and the world is just moving outside that....it's fine, your brain is happy with what it's seeing.

Framerate dips and stutter are a nightmare. Honestly I think one of the biggest differentiators is going to be the launcher software that can get your GPU and OS set up right to deliver a smooth experience.

New SDK version today. Queue Ahead feature potentially shaving another 2.8ms off latency. Will be giving it a try on the weekend hopefully, any MS saved is precious!

I took the plunge today, and it works :D I followed the recommendations here - https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3f8g9d/oculus_dk2_windows_10_fix_it_works/ctmb8no

It only works in extended mode, but great nonetheless!

Mate have you got a good link for getting DK2 working with Assetto Corsa?

Ideally I'd like it so that like war thunder it only starts in rift mode if the rift is switched on, dont want to go editing loads of config files if I have to reset them all after

Most of the bits I had to configure were documented in here - http://www.vrcircle.com/post/how-to-enable-oculus-rift-in-assetto-corsa-updated. This article doesn't cover modifying the post-processing settings though, as they weren't available when it was written. There are a few other tips in here too - https://forums.oculus.com/viewtopic.php?t=19833#p243542

Key bits though -
  1. Run the headset in Extended mode
  2. If your primary monitor can only support 60hz (like mine), the headset needs to be the primary monitor (landscape flipped, 1920x1080 for me)
  3. Resolution in Assetto should be set to 1920x1080@75hz
  4. If the in-car view looks washed out / overly white, disable auto-exposure on whichever post-processing filter you are using or disable PP altogether

Been looking at some more HTC Vive stuff, getting pretty excited about it now for later in the year.

Looks like there is going to be a John wick FPS with the Vive also

For those of us that wanted VR back in the 90's it seems like the next few years are going to be interesting time for VR and looks like we will finally get what was promised all those years ago.
