Off to Thailand to train Thai Boxing

Police in Thailand have launched a manhunt for a British Thai boxing expert who is suspected of murder.

The Thai authorities say they believe Lee Aldhouse, 28, is the main suspect in the killing of a 23-year-old ex-US Marine who was found stabbed to death.

The killing happened after a bar fight on the holiday island of Phuket.

This in the same camp your training at?

Both the US and British guy used to train at my gym a long time ago, not this time around though.

It is where I am situated (Rawai) and I go to Freedom bar which is 2 minutes down the road :p

On the weight loss front I bought a pair of shorts for South Africa in 2008 and wore them there. They were quite a way off fitting when I brought them here to Thailand but they now comfortably fit.

Nice to have some clothing conformation of the weight loss instead of just scale numbers :)

Makes me a bit sad seeing this thread in my favourite OCUK forum, because I go back to the UK in just a few weeks! Still, it's been a cracking 13 months in Thailand, make sure you savour the rest of your time here.

For those interested in doing something like Sin_Chase but worrying about finances, if you do some of the groundwork yourself, like sorting out your accommodation, you can cut down the cost significantly. A lot of the cost depends on how much you want everything to be sorted out for you, as well as geographical factors (Muay Thai somewhere like Phuket which most people have heard of and is full of tourists is going to be more expensive than a less popular destination, particularly one that is not right next to a beach).

It is very possible to live comfortably in the country without breaking the bank. I just did a little accounting and I found that 12.5 months has cost me £3,600, including flights. Muay Thai training needn't add a huge amount more to that. It's a far cry from the £80 a day ol' Seek regales us with!

Keep up the good work Sin_Chase

13 months, great amount of time to be out here! I have only been here 2 months and it feels like an eternity :)

What Skull says is true, I am happy to spend a little more for some additional quality/comforts but you could easily find a decent 1 bedroom place for 8,000THB a month in Rawai, Phuket. That's about £166 a month for accommodation in what is a touristy area. Eat at local Thai places and you can get good, honest food for non-tourist prices also.

6 Months is a while off yet but I am looking forward to getting home eventually, living it up as much as I can while out here though. Will miss it and not want to leave but after half a year I will be ready.

Hey Sin_Chase, hope it's going well! Just got a quick question for you, out of the people that train with you/at the camp that fight on a regular basis do many of them do any weight training? If so what type of things?

Cheers!

Hey, I've not seen any of the regular fighters weight train. Some students chose to but it seems quite rare.

This might be because the weight equipment is largely limited to free weights but could be because the Muay thai itself tends to be intensive enough.

In weight loss news I've hit a wall at 105Kg and am finding it hard to push through.

Off for 3 days from Friday visa running so plan to introduce 4Km runs into the daily workout and adjust some food intake and HOPEFULLY can start the ball rolling again.

Have go stuck for 10 days before now so it might just be the body doing its thing but better safe than sorry :P

It's one of the original camps, ran by Thais and owned by Thais. Manager is a world champion so at least the gym has some 'heritage'.

It's serious enough that most people doing fight training win their fights but not TOO serious. You can laugh and joke with the trainers and still train hard while having a good time. Other gyms can be WAY too serious about it all, which I guess is fine if you want that. Some other gyms members also feel their are some kind of elite and above others.

The location is good, the pricing is fine and I just think overall they have the experience and general compromises across the board to suit most :)

Been a while since I have posted any updates here or on blog...just getting my head down and training to be honest so not much new to report :p

Today I weighed in at 95kilos which represents 30kg of loss in 4 months. Last 2 months now, moved into a new place and well...just need to keep it up and see if I can smack down another 12-14kilos of weight. I am 2kilos ahead of my target when looking at a 4 month average, we shall see!

Back home on December 13th and quite looking forward to getting back. Bloody well feels like an eternity of Muay Thai training! :D

Good to hear the weight is still dropping off you ! :)

Can't remember if you said it but will you be attending muay thai classes when you get home ?

And cheers for the info on Rawai, missed your reply the first time round it seems doh ! :p

Fitness is immeasurably higher. Been sparring since the start of the MT training.

Can go 5 rounds in the ring for padwork no problems these days, at 3x the intensity originally used. Pretty much non-stop attacks on pads until the end of the 3 minute round, 1 minute break and into the next.

Could just about run 250metres without having to stop when I arrived and can happily do the 5.5km run to the beach without stopping at all now.

Muay Thai is amazing for fitness in general I believe, it's very demanding (legs, arms etc) Need to chuck some running in there for a bit more of that fitness side of things but otherwise the MT will hit your body up hard. Even now on a heavy 5 rounds can feel my left arm wanting to give up from the sheer amount of jabbing. Just have to push through the pain and finish up the round.

Hey, I'm very interested in doing something like this in about a year or so (providing I can persuade my work to let me take 2-3 months unpaid leave). Am currently doing muay thai twice a week in the UK though would love to be able to take a break from work and train full time.

I presume your villa you rented isn't within the training camp itself - did you sort that out once you'd got there? I'm assuming best plan would be to go into the non air conditions shared accommodation in the camp for the first two weeks in order to acclimatise then find a villa etc...

Also it is 6 days a week? - is it massively frowned upon if you say missed a day or an afternoon session (like say a Saturday) every two weeks or so you had a whole weekend free in order to do a bit more traveling. Although the purpose of the trip would be mostly just to train I can't say that I wouldn't like to go to a full moon party at least once or see a bit more of the island.

Also - did you get a fight in at all? Do they organise them quite frequently - would be cool to get one or two in towards the end of the trip after 2-3 months of intensive training.

Gotta love Muay Thai - Its conditioning is probably the best of any art.

I'm planning on heading over at some point next year, been training for about 14 Months in the UK though.

Should be a fantastic experience, Tiger Muay thai is really inconsistent from what i've heard!

Some people I train with say its teaching methods dont follow a strict syllabus, Then the next person you speak to say they have a syllabus.

Regardless theres a ton of camps! - Fairtex, JittiGym (Jitti is a usual choice of our fighters)

Dowie, I stayed on the camp for 1 month then found the villa. I am in some 9,000THB/Mth apts at the moment and it's great. Quite new, clean and simple. Good shower, all you need really for a good price.

It is 6 days a week but if you are not doing the fight training missing some sessions is fine.

I have not had a fight yet but will consider it closer to my leaving date in Dec :) Would like to, but want to be sure I can handle the more intensive fight training. Getting a fight is easy, one phonecall or two and they will be finding a matchup for you.

hey mate hope your training is going well! i have been training for nearly 4 years myself and ive got my 1st c class fight coming up next saturday in Bristol.. i train out of Sakprasert gym in Bournemouth uk but started my journey at Sitnawai camp in Portsmouth.. Kru Sert (of Sakprasert gym) is Thai so we train very hard and get pushed even harder.
how much are you training out there? every morning and afternoon? i train 5 times a week and run every other day and Sert has told us that sort of training is seen as a hobby in Thailand!
im hopefully getting out to Thailand next year for training.. i have a good contact out there who runs a camp.. hes an ex lumpini champion and knows his stuff. His names Tak.. dunno if your camp knows him.
