Well, i've heard <20MPG even on a run, 1L of oil every thousand miles, and horror stories involving engine seals and rotor tips.
That's why they're so cheap, I guess. They need to be looked after really well. It's a lot of car for the money if you get a good one, but it does involve a bit of a gamble, especially at your price point.

I think as long as you find one that's been looked after (and you're OCD about oil changes etc yourself) you're ok. It's just like most performance Jap cars, they need a lot of frequent TLC.

It's an odd one as normally if someone came to me and said they were thinking of getting a 3 series for £4K i'd roll my eyes so hard they'd drop out my ears.
But godinman has been there, done it, and worn the t-shirt. So unless you really are desperate for a change, it might just be best to stick to what you know?

I'm not desperate for change, but I do kind of want to experience a few different cars, having had the 3 for this much time I'd like to look at a few different options. The RX8 is most definitely a different option!
Saying that, a nice E36 would be a relativity reliable option...hmmm
E46, It's all getting a bit large and wafty now, I've driven my parents 328i E46 and I didn't find it very involving or interesting..

e38 or e39 - ideally a manual if you can find one - V8.
The only e30 you want now is an M3 (unless you find a tidy iS or 325i)
