Offended... by the Simpsons!

Christ if your offended by "The Simpsons" don't watch any more "Family Guy" as you'll probably burn your bra and write to your MP ;)

It's "C O M E D Y"

Personally, I'm not offended by it. I never experienced the IRA terrorism, and none of my family or friends were affected by it. Besides, I don't take cartoons seriously anyway, even if they do have a serious message. :p

+ I didn't see the episode. :p

The Simpsons offends everyone and makes sweeping generalisations; not been offended yet, maybe raised an eyebrow, but that's all.

I suppose this is funny as well.

I was in stitches. What is your point? A cartoon made a joke about the Irish hating the English, and to be fair, a lot of Irish don't care for the English hence it being funny. How shocking! Inform 'The Sun' immediately.

The same episode hinted that the Irish were all alcoholics but you don't see me getting my knickers in a twist. Get a grip on reality.

I found it hilarious.

What was offensive about it?

Ditto!

Some people are too highly strung - or just like to whinge and moan for no reason. (Reminds me of our trade union rep at work  Complete grade A ****).

Then again I'm not a very PC person so find this sort of thing hilarious.

Growing up around Manchester and Warrington with bombs going off was very scary for a 10 year old, even had a few bomb scares in Wigan when there bombing campaign was going on.

Just I found it offensive for some Americans to make a quick joke over something they are a million miles away from in there big mansions.

Thats how comedy is these days, look at family guy and southpark, they rip on everyone and everything.

Growing up in Northern Ireland in an area described as the "Murder triangle" during the troubles was even scarier! People take the mickey out of contentious relations between different nationalities all the time. If anything, it serves to make a mockery of them and hence play down the seriousness of it which is a good thing.

It was a bit strange a while back when out with my other half. There were soldiers out patrolling around near Bristol and she half was bit freaked out by it. I had barely even noticed, just reminded me of my childhood having chats with squaddies carrying SA-80s where we used to play. People in England are a lot more on edge over army presence than we are, which I guess is a good thing, but on the other hand, I feel that I have a better grasp of what the world is really like than any of my English friends.

The joke isn't about anyone suffering bombs, it's about the idea that any significant amount of Irish people would cheer at the thought of a bomb going off.

The Americans are known for their support of the IRA (apparently McDonalds used to donate a lot of money to them) so it's probably as much a dig at some American idea that the IRA were noble freedom fighters.

I didn't get offended by it, but i thought to myself "Huh". Kinda surprised, but not really offended. Surprised i didn't notice it before cause i seen that episode a load of times :D

I like a joke as much as the next, and i like a lot of edgy comedy. But stuff like the holocaust or certain events/bombings should be held sacrosant lest the message be forgotten and nothing is learnt from the past, thats my view anyway.

It's also mine.

Get over it

People really need to get of their high horses and stop getting offended at the smallest of things.

Some people are too highly strung - or just like to whinge and moan for no reason.
I'm finding the majority of these responses absolutely hilarious.

I havn't even thought about it since I posted and I come back to find that I'm a fun killing, miserable, PC git! The forum continues to stun me with its knee jerking.

This is the exact reason I'm starting to partially loathe the anti-pc crowd. Someone finds something moderate offensive, BURN HIM AT THE STEAK.

It was clearly a joke, a harsh and offensive joke. I laughed when I saw it, I was merely pointing out I though it was rather insensitive for a programme such as the Simpsons, and was wondering if anyone else thought the same. Don't have a hernia over it!

To expand its not even something ridiculous to get offended by, Christmas songs in public places, baba 'rainbow' sheep are examples worthy of mocking. Its also totally understandable if someone got offended by a 9/11 joke.

It would be different if it portrayed a building in london being blown up, but really all it showed was a flag being blown up. It was obvious what it was hinting at though.
Actually it quite clearly showed an 'English' building being blown up, it wasn't just a flag.

I'm guessing the episode was pre 9/11, i.e. before the Americans thought terrorism was a bad thing.

Exactly. But then again we laugh at many American mishaps too.
