Offended... by the Simpsons!

No, you're not the only person silly enough to think that cartoons can't be offensive.

Fair enough, a cartoon can be offensive these days. But then people are just too sensitive IMO. I hate the whole walking on eggshells culture.

Disclaimer: I've drunk too much and am probably posting nonsense

It's a cartoon. Get over it.

The word offensive is thrown around so much nowadays.

Some guy at college wore a t-shirt that said 'FCK THE POWER TRIP' and some student complained that it was offensive to him, so the guy couldn't wear it anymore.

The only time I find something offensive is when someone verbally insults me in person (not bothered over the net)

1) Offensive that they're being cheeky to insult me
2) Obvious reasons

Actually it quite clearly showed an 'English' building being blown up, it wasn't just a flag.
I much prefer how you relate the Union Jack to England ;)
Just I found it offensive for some Americans to make a quick joke over something they are a million miles away from in there big mansions.
Why so? They've seen terrorism in their lifetimes too...

Jokes about countries hating each other are commonplace, and usually very funny. Hell I certainly don't get offended at all the anti french humour I see on those TV shows (and on these very forums, often enough :p), though occasionally I do feel some of the jokes don't apply all that much any more ;)

yeah, the French can't really be classed, as a real country/nationality they're just people we let live n the land we captured from, the Germans, like gypsies but more smelly :)

Correct! And now that I live in your land that you captured from no one, I return the favour :D

So, did anyone else see it? Did you find it shocking?

The key difference for me is that they are mocking America's previous support of the IRA, rather than making fun of the bombings themselves. From that angle, I don't have a problem with it.

as soon as i saw it i laughed out pretty loud so as i said earlier i found it a tad amusing :P

btw for the op this same simpsons ep has been aired quite a lot didn't you notice that bit before?

Hello all,

And so on.

I knew what episode your thread was going to be about when I saw the title.

I understand your thoughts.
I think it all depends on how you were brought up and your age/point in life.
I know I was a little bit weary about letting my children watching it especially with all the references to alcohol.

There are probably a lot of people here who comment that don’t have children or were brought up with different values.

But the humor was geared towards adults and I know my children would have had no idea whatsoever what the show was portraying... which is more than likely the same kind of thing I watched as a child.
There is also something about the way the whole town is getting ****** and smashing/fighting but when Bart (the 'child') gets drunk they all stop and are appalled, the writers put meaning into this im sure.

havent read past page one, but seeing we are all in the mood for 'jokes'.

How do you fit 58 jews in a mini

2 in the front, 2 in the back and 54 in the ash tray?

Only a joke, how can that offend?

ITS ONLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYY CARRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTONNNNNNNNNn

I love this episode, it's one of my favorites! Up there with the episode where Homer Becomes an astronaught

I think it's no edgier than a lot of other 'borderline' jokes that they'd make against other races/sexes/religions/nationalities really..

Complaints like this are why we are in such a PC age imho

thank you!!

get a grip OP
What are you talking about, really? I found something mildly offensive, I understand it was a joke, I didn't make a big deal out of it, I didn't complain. I merely wished to see what other forum members thought. What exactly is there for me to get a grip of?

Heres some appropriate biology for you:
