'Offensive' Humor

Surely the only "bad" joke is one which isn't funny? :p

Otherwise, yeah I agree, it's important to judge your audience!

Humour is subjective though and which is why some people don't find certain subjects funny and take offence.

Notice how for example, that SJWs don't find anything funny. :p

I don't agree with the hypocrisy of it, but there you go.

My 'claim to fame' with regard to this was back when I was captain of a football team.

Post-match banter in the changing rooms, our black striker was first in the shower (as always) swinging his tool around telling and showing everybody the size, and explaining what he will do to us white boys once we join him in the shower. This prompted all sorts of responses such as 'go back home on the banana boat you came from', etc. The banter back and forth went on for quite some time.

I then had to put a stop to it, it was getting out of hand.

'C'mon lads calm down, we are all mates here, and I for one will not have any form of racism in this team, I personally have nothing against black people... I think everyone should own one'

Our striker was not happy.

That is ridiculous. Very funny, but ridiculous. Surely if it was going 'back and forth' he can't just decide when he gets offended.

Actually on this subject I saw a post on Reddit with the guys behind Cards Against Humanity doing an AMA:

Thank you guys for this game. My housemate's infant son died after 5 days. A few weeks later we're playing CAH with some friends from out of town. The father draws the 'In the Future we will use ______ as money.' We play the turn and the last card from the answer stack is 'Dead Babies'. Looking around the room everyone is just stunned and quiet. The father then says, 'I have to give it to the person who had the balls to play that card.' There's a long pause as everyone's looking to see who's going to own up to it. A few long seconds go by and then the mother of the child slowly raises her hand and says, 'me.' Everyone bursts out laughing, including both parents. That was the first time that either parent had really laughed since their son died. So, thanks for that.

I always thought it was acceptable to make fun of peoples' choices NOT aspects of their lives over which they had no control. In my opinion it would be perfectly acceptable to make fun of someone's attire, chattels, life choices etc but to make fun at their loss of a child, a rape or child abuse would be totally unacceptable.

Jokes a joke, no matter the context :D

And yes if you laugh at a racist joke you are a right wing nazi racist person.

The only exception in my opinion is personal jokes. ie laughing at the expense of someone, which i think is less acceptable than other so call offensive jokes.

I don't understand your logic at all. Jim Jeffries' joke was not aimed specifically at those individuals. You could argue that making fun specifically out of someones choices, as in your example of clothes etc. is more offensive than making fun of a general or fictional situation.

A joke is only as offensive as you want it to be surely.

I have never heard a joke and gone "That's so offensive" and then proceeded to crease my forehead so much that a steam iron would have been needed to fix it.

It's either funny or it's not. There is no 'Offensive'. If you find yourself continually being 'Offended' by things, it's you with the problem. Nothing to do with anyone else.

Well doofer god forbid, if your wife had had a miscarriage, a still birth or whatever, your virginal daughter had been gang raped, and one of your works colleague continued to make jokes about it, would you NOT be offended? As such from what you have written it would be you with the problem, it is "nothing to do with anyone else"

There's a big difference between getting upset at someone who's aware of a sensitive situation and bolsters on regardless compared to a professional stand-up comedian who has no personal relationship.

Belly - Thats different, If the joke is aimed at someone specifically because it happend to them then the joke is in poor taste. Obviously the joke is being told in malice.

And I think therein lies the problem, many of these people who get offended by everything are also the sort of people who think the world revolves around them.

My experience too.

I really upset someone once

Me; *Tells joke that is slightly risque*
Everyone laughs except one woman who proclaims "actually I find that quite offensive"
Me; "Well **** off then"

To her credit she did!

Dye your hair pink and redefine your gender and sexuality and become an SJW?
