Offical PSP2 (or rather NGP) Thread

I just... don't want this stuff on my PSP. If I wanted touch screen this and tilt that, i'd get a DS (or just play on the girlfriend's one). I bought my PSP so I could get a Final Fantasy, FIFA or even GTA fix on the train or other similar journey.

I always felt the PSP was the "pure" handheld gaming machine to the DS's "quirky and different". But Sony seem determined to blur the lines. I don't really understand why.

Did you watch the event?, practically every game they showed was a 'core' game, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, COD etc, Epic showing off the unreal engine 3 and also saying "this system is ideal for a gears of war like experience", (exact quote bty) due to the dual stick controls, Sony was blatantly pitching this system as a hardcore gaming platform.

Also at the same time the system offers unique capacitive multi-touch touch controls that 'can' be incorporated into games or be the sole control mechanism for unique smaller game experiences like Flower for example, think what 'That Game Company' could come up with on a system like this.

Also everybody that played Uncharted for example said they you didn't have to use any of the touch controls if you didn't want to so I wouldn't worry, personally I love the idea of the device having touch screen for ease of use for the store, web browsing, os navigation, in game user interfaces etc.

Mostly because you, I and most people on the internets are not their only customers. They sold a ton of PSPs but outside of Japan game sales have been awful. They have sat back and watched as the DS was able to capitalise on the mums and aunts who want to play brain training by poking the screen. It could have been made for the PSP but wouldn't have been near as intuitive.

For Sony to look after themselves long term they have to try and get into both segments. The price is probably going to keep them out in the short term but because of the tech they are using fab costs could come down fairly rapidly allowing them to get it into a more family friendly price point. More unit sales means more chance for devs to make more money on games, devs make more money on games and they will make more games.

With the NGP it's really win win for the core gamer as far as I can see.

100+ million smartphone sales in Q4 2010... Mums and Aunts have started playing those games on phones. Sony, Nintendo, Apple and everyone else knows this.

Exactly, you get all the benefits of a capacitive tablet/polished OS and the traditional Playstation experience. Perfect!

I'm guessing we'll see similar tegra 3 based portables in a year or two. (Prays for Atari Lynx 3 and Valve working on a mobile Steam client :D)

Edit:

Game devs have never had it so good... They can develop a game and deploy it across ARM based devices within weeks (see dungeon defenders, Need for speed etc)

I don't know any woman over 35 with a smartphone. They almost all have a DS though. They rarely want to surf the web, get directions, etc. All of them much prefer a simple phone that does texts and calls.

The NGP has been designed to be the pinnacle of Playstation suite, it's all about ecosystems now :D

:D

Why is Sony teasing us with the NGP (Neo Geo Pocket lol) now? I've seen it and I want it now. I gotta wait 11 months. Cry

It single handedly made me cancel my 3DS pre-order... I was so excited for the 3DS too. :(

Oh well I could always get both. :o

The idea of UMD > NGP Flash isn't totally dead.

I think they mentioned that on the opening day or two. Its not going to pacify those that bought the UMDs though as there still wont be a trade in programme.

really looking forward to GDC and E3 for mroe details and stuff.

I'm honestly not holding out hope for a release in the EU this year though.
