***** Official 2014 BBQ Thread - Sun is out, time to grill!! *****

How do you all light your chimney starters i have been using two fire lighters in the bottom or a piece of paper, but i find it lights the bottom bits of charcoal and takes so long to reach the top that the bottom bits have all but burnt out.

I actually haven't tried that, I might see if I'm brave enough to give that a go this weekend. If I can still type properly, I'll report back!

I'd be really interested to hear how it goes (though let's hope you still have hands afterwards :p).

I tend to put a fair bit of extra paper with it and/or some scrap bits of wood. Tbh I find sometimes I have to light it more than once in order to get the majority of coals to light up in time.

I think it's normal for the bottom coals to be more pwn'd than the rest though.

I will try more paper next time then.

Just got our new barbecue yesterday, a Kinley Kettle one. Not sure about this chimney starter thing though... I'm sure it works great, but I never had a problem with the old fashioned way.

We just got a load of boerewors in, so will try it out this weekend!

Good choice, I do love a good boerewors, denser than most sausages with a great taste. Mmmmm.

Got couple of racks of ribs defrosting. Not sure if I'll do them today or tomorrow.

You can pick up coals with welding gloves. Or at least the ones I use.

I use welding gloves as well and regularly pick up coals to move them. Wouldn't want to hold on to them for more than a couple of seconds though.

I light my chimney starter with my wok burner - a lot easier than faffing around with paper :p

Got some scallops and prawns and a rib eye steak for tonight. Going to do surf and turf with some vegetable skewers. Also got some chicken thighs to make some Shish Tawook tomorrow night. Found a recipe for Grilled Sourdough Flatbreads so I'll try some of them with my Shish Tawook.

None of that issue, get good ones. Well they cost more for most people ;) can't remover what the name is I get cheap ones which heat soon penetrates and good ones. Grey with a brand name which are far superior and you don't heed to be a huge rush with.

Can you remember the brand? I don't mind paying extra for good ones. Mine are just cheap ones I got from Amazon. I'd like to use them for oven gloves but I can't hold on to a roasting tin for more than about 5 seconds with mine.

In need of some vegetable ideas for the BBQ. Meat, I have pretty well covered but looking for variety in veg. Usually go with asparagus, corn, courgette or peppers but starting to get a little bored.

Aubergines work well when grilled, and so do potatoes (brush with a little olive oil, wrap in foil and placed directly onto the coals) and then there's the old South African staple which isn't a veg but has tomato and onion in. Make some cheese, tomato and onion sandwiches, squash them down (I also squash the edges a bit) to make them stick together better and put those straight onto the grill. Grill each side for no more than a few mins. Keep checking as they catch and burn very quickly. I cook them alongside the meat and when they're done I usually offer them to my guests as I take them off. That way the cheese is still melting :) They're amazing. My mom adds green pesto in with the cheese, tomato and onion and they are always so good!

Aubergine sounds good, potatoes I usually do in a dish with butter and whatever herbs & spices I randomly combine while everything else is cooking.

Yeah I don't really think a sandwich counts a veg...that said that is a tasty idea!
