Yeah, 5 podiums in 7 races. What a slacker, hey @muon?

How comes you keep ignoring today which is what I am referring to.

How do you explain not overtaking Stroll today? Someone earlier, did by saying he isn't necessarily interested in doing the best he personally can, and is enjoying driving a good car. Which is fine, but is not what an ambitious racing driver who always wants to win does.

There is something in his contract where he is incentivised to give up places (which he did today) or his motivation isn't there anymore.

His team radio was also bizarre. He was telling the team to tell Stroll not to worry about him getting so close. He wasn't planning on overtaking.

How can anyone possibly question Alonso's motivation after the first portion of this season? He's making drivers almost half his age look rubbish most weekends.
He had an off weekend, was always going to happen eventually, he screwed himself damaging the car in qualifying.

Incentivised to give up places? I don't think I've ever heard so much rubbish

Just seemed to me the only place he thought he would get is that one, and no further. So, playing the long game, more brownie points with the boss at minimal cost to his immediate campaign. He knows he won't win the drivers and the net result to the constructors is the same.

He clearly sees potential in this team, especially with it moving away from being a customer team and I guess, at least for now, wants to be a part of that journey.

I gave it a 7. Maybe a little generous but it was good to see the Mercs pushing back. George raced really well today. Nice overtake and some funny team radio from him.
Ferrari are hilarious.

He explained this. It was so Lance wouldn't be stressed out, and Stroll himself out of the race.
You've got a real strange way of looking at things. He wasn't racing for a podium today, so what sense is there risking his position, and a solid double points finish for the team?

How come you keep ignoring the rest of the season? Teammates hold position at the end of a race all the time. Especially when there's little to play for. Reading anything into it is daft, doubly so when you're talking about a driver so clearly excelling.

How do you explain not overtaking Stroll today?

I already did: pointless risk for minimal gain. That's what Alonso said in interviews afterwards.

It's also a smart move to build the team up rather than engage in petty greed. Alonso doesn't need to prove he's better than Stroll. He doesn't need a 6th place. He does need the team behind him.

Personally I totally understand holding the position for the team but he was much much quicker wasn’t he? Why not ask to switch places, team could have pulled the old Perez/RB “different strategy” card.

It’s probably mostly politicking on Alonsos part. Keep the peace with the man-child who’s father is the team owner.

Papa Stroll should really think about kicking his son to the curb, especially with all this investment that’s starting to pay off.

No one says he has to prove anything. But it is clear he has taken his foot off the gas (literally today) if his mentality is simply enjoying his time. He isn't putting 100% into racing.
Unlike yourself I would say Alonso can see the bigger picture, clearly you wish to judge a drivers ability by one, unusual, race. Clearly Alonso was supporting his team mate and in a gracious manner..

Not by the time he reached Stroll, no. He was on younger tyres and as we saw with other driver pairs - especially Pérez and Russell - there was a big pace difference when the tyres were young but it dropped off as the laps went by. The difference between 5 lap old and 15 lap old tyres is bigger than between 10 and 20. By the time he'd have been in striking range the pace difference would have dropped off to only a couple of tenths.

Watched the highlights, reel...they REALLY showed the strggle to find anything to show lol. Like the large jump in laps of anything happening for it to be a single overtake told me everything.

There were plenty of overtakes, but it was just a very dull race. They were just pootling around slowly. I actually found Monaco more exciting.

This is hilarious in terms of the pace difference between Max and Checo https://imgur.com/a/yrjfQoY

Nothing against Checo but I could see them swapping in Danny Ric, which would be fun to see.

Depressing to think he had loads of pace in hand still.

It is a shame Max doesnt have someone like Lewis or Alonso for a teammate, then we might actually have a title fight. Maybe even Leclerc, Norris or Russell even.

There does seem to be quite the talent gulf in race pace between some drivers. I mean in 2021, Bottas and Perez were basically nowhere in most of the races compared to Max and Lewis.

They all (on the whole) seem to be able to qualify quite close, but the race craft, consistency and tyre management really seperates them come race day.

A mediocre 5.

Unfortunately, rain is now needed to make GPs interesting.

I was watching with it on in the background. Still debating if f1 tv is worth it vs C4 highlights.
