Rule 32.4b of the Sporting Regulations requires them to give a rookie one FP1 or FP2 session for each car entered, i.e. during the year they have to replace both Norris and Piastri with a rookie in FP1 and they don't have the option to make Piastri give up his seat both times.
I wasn't aware of that rule. It makes sense but it is such a critical time for their time.

It was introduced a couple of years back to try and ensure more opportunities for rookies to try a real F1 car - and, yeah, it's not an ideal time but it was up to McLaren when they wanted to run it. I suspect it will be fine. A massive crash is unlikely, especially since Mexico has decent run offs, and Norris has run on this track plenty of times.

I guess they aren't giving the car to Logan Sargeant

Apparently Marko has asked Perez's wife to step in for him this weekend!!

Normally I would say, in this precarious position, that underperforming at your home race would surely be the last nail but it's honestly hard to predict this year for RB. I do hope Lawson does well when he gets his shot. Everything I've seen of him on and off track has seemed positive and would be great to see more young talent on the track, actually performing.

quite a few rookies in FP1 this weekend
Felipe Drugovich - Aston Martin
Ollie Bearman - Ferrari
Pato O’Ward - McLaren
Kimi Antonelli - Mercedes
Robert Shwartzman - Sauber

this leaves Ferrari, Mclaren, RBR and Williams all still required to run a rookie once more this season.

Williams' lawyers must surely be combing through the small print to figure out how much it costs to boot him.
Can only wish they find a way! I'm genuinely hoping that Franco finds a seat for next year. As far as I'm concerned he's the most exciting prospect of the fresh crop of drivers in the last couple of years.
