****Official 6850/6870 Reviews thread****

What link? it doesn't show anything relating to 4 to 8x AA?

EDIT: Ahh I see theres some 8x AA in a couple of sections further in

At the AA level that are shown in that link the gfxcard is already feeling the pinch so showing higher AA levels is irrelevant.

neither on their own tells much of a story - you need to look at the baseline fps on a graph really.

And it depends on what type of game you play as well. RTS games I'm not all that bothered about minimums and normally a low average is good enough to get smooth gameplay (Total War games for example). Racing games are a different kettle of fish, I remember playing GRID on my old 8800GT and the frame-rate difference between average and minimum could cause me to crash my vehicle on bends as it was hard to judge just has fast you were going as you didn't know if it was the brakes that slowed you down or if it was the game frame rate that was actually slow.

6870 CF looks good on paper but personally I'd still go SLI for more reasons that just I'm slightly bias that way honest.

Don't discount GTX460 SLI either - tho its not so much a sell now the 470 prices have dropped, GTX470 SLI @ 800MHz will take a bit of beating.

oh yeah. 470 gtx has better overclocking potential than these 6870. And at SLI 800mhz would be close to 480gtx SLI performance.

BUT

the noise / heat. Dont think I can live with it.

Silence is golden. But you wont make a mistake either way. 470SLI or 6870Crossfire.

What gets me thinking

IS 6990 going to be two 6870?
Or is it goint to be two 6950 bolted together?

Thats the question.

That depends entirely on how much impact higher AA levels have.

If its feeling the pinch at 4xAA its going to feel it at 8xAA.

I'm not interested in seeing how 8xAA or more performs if 4xAA is already at 18-30 fps because i would be already thinking of pulling back to 2xAA.

I've seen some of the issues people have had with crossfire and AMD - especially things like BC2 on the 5970 and I don't get the impression those kinda issues are going away any time soon. Granted SLI isn't completely trouble free but actual working updates seem to be more frequent.

The only 'but' here is not to assume anything, we don't know what the 6850/6870's are like with overclocking yet so wait until the proper reviews come out. ;)

Plenty of SLI users have had issues with BC2 too.

Thats very scenario specific and not all the time the cards are running that poorly - plus you don't know what the 8x AA hit is it might be so little its effectively none at all.

As soon as the cards hits the pinch then that's the time to stop its does not matter if there is little to no noticeable hit after that point.

oh look 5fps at 4xaa & 4fps at 32xaa.

The hit becomes irrelevant as you have already gone below the acceptable point & there are always going to be parts in a game that will widen the hit.

Very 1 dimensional way to look at a very narrow part of the bigger picture.
