Get another 670. Cheapest solution, epic power. You've got the board for it :)

i had only planned on a cheap cpu upgrade after getting the 670. iv since changed ram, mobo, more fans plus fan controller.. iv no money left for another 670! :p not that its stopped me from looking ;)

edit: making a mess :D

Is the upgrade in the pic just the board, or other stuff too?

Yay for mess ! I've still got some work to do on my rig. Mainly getting a molex - 4 pin and putting that in and the rest of my cable extensions :) Will probably use the brand new 92mm redwings I have for the northbridge and vrms.

in that pic the new parts are the mobo, fan controller (on top of psu) and ram (next to psu)

i had 4 x 4gb vengeance before and thought i might be better off with 2 x 8gb sticks

oh, and the cpu.. obviously :D

I'm hoping to get my dead Extreme3 replaced and build a second rig. Still got my Area 51 ALX chassis, board (needs replacing) 8320 and an SSD spare now.

Would make a lovely gaming rig for my lovely lady :)

I connected the extra 4 pin ATX on my crosshair V formula. I don't know if it made any difference but I am now at 5.04GHz AIDA64 stable at 59C 1,5V air cooled.

Earlier I fitted the 4 pin. Hasn't made much difference overall but has made it possible for me to verify a 5.2ghz.

And to get a 4.7 1.44 OC. I had to go to the bus though to get 4.7 as on 220 FSB and multi it wasn't stable at 4.7. It is now, LinX style with great temps :)

Looking good there orange

Andy and Moogleys interesting to hear about the 4-pin. My PSU is too crappy for this (Antec 750w venom) so it doesn't come with an extra 4 pin cable. Would be nice to try but I can't bring myself to buy a PSU just for that. I can get to 5GHz at 1.5v but reluctant to go much more. Is 1.55v the max for the FX 8-cores?

My PSU didn't have one either. I had an old Dell sitting out in the garage (Pentium 4) so I just chopped it off and wired it to a molex. Two ground and two 12v+.

You can get them on that auction site. Look for P4 power adaptor.

I'm only running a 750w PSU mate.

Had mine running 5.2ghz last night. Was running fairly stable just the temps were insanely high. I managed 20 mins of prime before it shut down. I even fitted a H100i to see if it would cope better but its no better than my decent air cooler...

This chip needs some decent water cooling.

Yeah that was the conclusion I came to. Pretty cool to have an actual need for real water cooling other than looks though !

What I did notice and this may be of help to you guys... Bus clocking did not seem to need volts or cause any more heat. Where as the multi? man, fryin' tonight. I've now got a 4.75 1.44 stable with a max temp of 59c in LinX..

Speaking of which. Don't use Prime. Or, if you do, just run it until it passes test one. That usually means you're OK. Use LinX and run 5 passes. If you get through that? it usually means I'm stable everywhere I want to be (gaming on 8 cores for example).
