***Official AMD Mantle Thread***

@ Matt

Are these games still getting Mantle?

- Mass Effect
- Star Wars
- Need for speed
- Mirror's Edge

This slide was presented by Johan at an AMD event.

You will have to contact EA-DICE with questions; it would not be proper for me to comment on their future plans on their behalf. I’m sure you understand.

AMD should never have got involved with Mantle as it is a huge waste of resources for very little return from a business point of view.

AMD need to concentrate on making good quality cards at a good price.

There may be an argument that Mantle worked best with obsolete hardware but that view is looking backwards not forwards like the company should be. There was only very marginal gains (and sometimes negative) with the latest hardware and that situation was only going to get worse with the next gen of hardware when it is available.

the argument could be that it worked best with the GCN APU`s - giving them a boost when needed

There is more to PC Gaming than Graphics Cards, i for one am glad someone kick started what can only be a great future for PC Gaming.
If it was upto Microsoft we would still be stuck in 2003 by 2023

They got a hell of a lot of press and sold a lot of cards with Mantle so I think it is worth it :p

Plus their engineers who worked on Mantle would have helped to improve the hardware and have probably been working with all manner of companies to provide better APIs for their cards. Mantle itself will probably die out very quickly once the likes of DX12 hits the shelves but AMD would have made a lot of money off it already and even more developer connections which helps to improve their cards in the long run.

From a consumer point of view its a fad but from AMD business perspective it is a win-win even if it dies today.

Fair enough, if AMD never said it, that's cool. I imagine a few people bought AMD for some/all of the games on that list and if they don't come with Mantle, they will be a little disappointed.

Still, maybe those games will come with DX12 and win win for all :)

Having seen the latest market share figures I think it is quite safe to say that the opposite has occurred and sales have tanked.

AMD need to stop wasting resources and concentrate on producing the best possible next gen hardware.

I would have thought a few less fixer videos and more freesync info reviews. We are getting the 1st freesync monitor in stock and yet people have no reviews to go by.

Edit: nope.

The best way to kick start the PC gaming market is to produce hardware for the next generation that smacks the NVidia 9 series out the park.

Looking backwards with Mantle is not the way to go.

A bit ahead of yourself Kaap, no one knows what the 300 Series has lined up for us yet.

No really

I am expecting big things from the top end 300 series.

Unfortunately for Mantle a by product of the improved performance of the upcoming 300 series is that there is less need or use for Mantle.

except there must be since its being used as the bootstrap for vulkan!

Their sales were always going to tank once the armada of cards from the mining boom hit the used market though, with used 7970/280X at the £100 mark and 290/290X sub £200 the was quite a gulf between new an used and so that will have hurt sales a lot with some users who don't care about buying new.

A more powerful GPU does not improve the CPU Batch Extraction Layer.

Besides that Mantle is not just about the end result, its also about the journey and broadening of possibilities for those whom work with such things.

And I expect the game devs will be lining up to use it the same as they have done with Mantle lol.

Game devs are very two faced, they will say that Mantle is the greatest thing since sliced bread but even if it makes it's way into a game the support they give it is practically zero. I am still waiting for CF profiles for example many months after the games have launched.

On high end i7/GPU setups in demanding situations there is hardly any difference between using Mantle and DX11 and worse still at extreme levels DX11 has a habit of performing better. This is a situation that is only going to get worse for Mantle with the arrival of the 300 series.
