Who came up with the title Chief gaming scientist? I have no idea why but it always makes me laugh!
Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.
I don't know exactly, everything seems to be pretty vague. AMDMatt's post said it's not going away. Since AMD and it's customers seem to be so anti-proprietary I was just wondering when this would be made open for everyone.
I remember a lot of people on here saying it would be made open, even going as far a making bets, which they later changed their minds on after the deadline for 'going open' had past.
Since PhysX and GSync and everything is bad because it's restricted to Nvidia cards I was assuming that being an AMD product it wouldn't be proprietary. I just wondered when this would be? Or is it not happening and is proprietary ok now?
I was right then, clear skipping over the other part that Mantle based/evolved=Khronos=open, it was and still is baiting for a forum argument
It's important to clarify that we're not retiring Mantle, nor is it going away. In 2015, the Mantle graphics API has broader applicability in solving graphics industry problems than ever before.
Mantle as a standalone API continues to evolve in private with a consortium of game developers interested in furthering the standard for new and innovative use cases..
Looking like Mantle is the back end for their VR, it's not an underlying rule everything needs to go through DX=everyone else can use Khronos as the back end for anything too.
AMD achieved what they set out, made an api, handed it over for everyone=open, doesn't mean they can't use it for themselves.
Grats googly, job done, see you around.
So I'm asking what's happening with Mantle, not Vulkan, Mantle. Just to be really clear, not asking about Vulkan or DX12, I'm asking about Mantle that is according to AMDMatt/Huddy continuing to evolve.
It was explained back in March. You want Mantle in games? Go for DirectX 12 and Vulkan. Mantle is not going to be public. Rather than doing that they given it to Khronos group. Mantle for the time being will only be used for customer with special needs.
I doubt you will get more information than that.
But it talks about a 'private with a consortium of game developers' will still be using it. So what they're using is it going to be proprietary or open?
Everyone keeps seeming to make this about Vulkan, but I'm not asking about Vulkan. Matt's quote says the Mantle API spec served as the foundation for Vulkan. That doesn't mean it's just Mantle by another name, if it was it wouldn't have Nvidia or Intel support as Mantle didn't.
Back in the day AMD weren't saying that they were developing Mantle so they could give the spec over to someone else to make open and that's not what people on this forum were arguing either.
AMD said they would keep control so they could change it quicker to include new features in their hardware. Doesn't sound a lot like 'hand it over to a 3rd party so it can be made more generic and we have less control'.
This is shocking
On those figures can you blame developers for not supporting the PC as much as console. That's shocking especially when you add up the peaks across the 4 consoles. I never thought it was that bad.
