**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

Thanks ubern00b. Gonna finish installing my P5K-E tonight. Fitted it last night then realised that I'd forgotten to fit the backing plate for my block.

I can see it being a problem then if I set it to RAID and connect two hard drives and a dvd drive as the dvd wouldn't operate in RAID mode?

There's normally another chipset though that I could use to separate the RAID and non-RAID devices though. I noticed 1-4 is red and 5 and 6 are black connectors?

Actually 1,2,5,6 are red, 3,4 are black. Red slots are for bootable devices, black is for non bootable devices. I dont use raid but I assume that if you enable RAID you can set which ports are to be raided. The JMicron controller on this board only controls the esata and ide port. All of the 6 sata ports are controlled by the ICH9R controller.

Well my rig has arrived and everything works just as it should. Dont you just love it when everything goes to plan :D

I plugged my sata hdd into sata1 (Red) and my ide dvd into the ide slot. I left all options in bios as defaults - ide mode was selected as on.

Just finishing installing my programs and then I am putting it in its case... after that though I shall be having a look at what this E2160 can do ;)

Yeah I was starting to panik a bit last night lol, I was having horrible dreams that I would be stuck here on a Friday with a rig that didn't boot with a ide drive.

There would have been no way of getting a sata drive before Tuesday and I would have had to got ripped off in the purple shirt shop :D

Agr3sive...

Glad to hear everything went to plan.:)

Just out of interest, what RAM are you using and within your BIOS what timings and settings are you running?. Voltage etc?.

Also, having only just started reading through this long and informative thread, how do I start overclocking with basic functions?.

On my old ASRock Intel mobo all I could do was ramp up the FSB to take my E6300 to 2.1Ghz, which it maxed out at as the board and the old DDR400 were my limiting factors. This P5K though has a multitude of different tweaking settings which I dont know whether to be happy or apprehensive about!!

Can someone quickly explain what basic settings I need to play with in order to o/c my CPU up to @3.0Ghz? ( Or is there an idiots guide somewhere in this thread??!! ).

Cheers.

Draeger, if you want I can walk you through what I did when I was overclocking my E6600.

Advanced --> CPU Configuration
CPU Ratio Control = Manual
Ratio CMOS Setting = 9 [7 should be the highest for yours, I think, so select that]
C1E Support = Disabled

Advanced --> JumperFree Configuration
Ai Overclocking = Manual
CPU Ratio Control = Manual

Ratio CMOS Setting = [See above]
FSB Frequency = 377 [I'd try 300 to start with]
PCIE Frequency = 101
DRAM Frequency = DDR2-905MHz [Choose the lowest one for now in order to remove it as a limiting factor]
DRAM Command Rate = 2T
DRAM Timing Control = Manual
CAS# Latency = 5
RAS# to Cas# Delay = 5
RAS# Precharge = 5
RAS# Activate to Precharge = 18

TWR...to...TRTP = Auto
DRAM Static Read Control = Auto

Transaction Booster = Auto
Clock Over-Charging Mode = Auto

CPU Spread Spectrum = Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum = Disabled

CPU Voltage = 1.4625 [You'll probably want to start with something a fair bit lower than this]
CPU Voltage reference = Auto
CPU Voltage Damper = Enabled
CPU PPL Voltage = Auto
DRAM Voltage = 2.15 [Set this to what's required by your particular RAM]
FSB Termination Voltage = Auto
North Bridge Voltage = 1.4
North Bridge Voltage Reference = Auto
South Bridge Voltage = Auto

The most important things you need to alter are in the bold, red text.

Is anybody else having problems with these boards (P5KR) loosing bios settings? I have had yet another call from one of my customers today with the same fault... Its a real pain as it defaults the SATA configuration to IDE rather that AHCI and then the system blue screens when goes into windows... :(

Cheers, Mansize_tissue !!!

Appreciate that m8.

Still got to install and set up a few more things on mine once I get home from work shortly, couple of progs and apps and I've still got the CCC to install for the X1900XT but after thats all done I will follow your guide there and start tweaking.

Thanks. :D

My install went awesome, no problem at all! My vista score is 5.5, but if i OC my CPU it will goto 5.7 (Hard drives score). Whats yours agr3sive?
Im really chuffed, pc is fast as f....

My ram is only 1gb of Corsair Value 5/5/5/15 at the moment, its just running at its default settings of 1.8v and 5/5/5/15 timings. I had to build the rig on a budget and couldn't wait to my birthday on Wednesday to get the main bits. Needless to say though on Wednesday I will be buying a nice 2-4gb set of Ocz or Corsair :D

I am not using Vista mate so I can't answer that question, I am going to stick with XP for now. Glad your install went well, its good when that happens... almost like a weight off the mind, I have had a lot of builds where something has ended up being faulty.

Cheers, Agr3sive.

I'm running with this Geil Ultra Low Latency PC26400 stuff:-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL

2 x 1Gb sticks and now I've sorted the voltage problem I had with it, I can recommend it for the P5K. Good value for money as well.

Agree as well, this system is now flying :D

Can't believe how quick this thing is running on Vista and that's at stock speeds!!!.

Looking forward to o/clocking it a bit once I get it set up as I want it to be. :)

Pity I didn't score more out of the "B" grade option I took with this, but then you take yer chances and get what you get I spose.

Could do with a backplate for it, will have a try in the Members Market for one.

I know what your saying there mate about it feeling fast, I have been using a really old Celeron 2000 and the difference is amazing. I have had a Core 2 Duo before but you can easily forget just how fast they are.

Members Market is a good idea for a backplate, sometimes you can get them from the manufacturers but I can imagine that they would cost quite a bit. Keep us posted on what luck you have with oc'ing, I normally jump straight in and do it on the first day but I am going to double check everything is stable first over the weekend. I will post here when I have some results though :)

This board is a breeze to overclock on. I have everything set to Auto except vcore, vdimm, fsb and voltage damper (on) and I booted straight in on second reboot @ 450 fsb. In comparison my old ASUS Commando was a nightmare!

I'm well impressed with this so far but still having a couple of minor hassles.

Just connected my USB front panel connector from the case USB connections on the front of it to the motherboard USB header.

Booted up and loaded Vista fine but for some reason I lost all Network connection capability. Would not connect to my router and could not get online.

Switched off, removed USB cable from the header and rebooted. Now connects to the network no problem.

Switched off, reconnected USB headers, rebooted and same again, cant connect to any network or router. So took the USB header cable back off and all is fine again with the network.

Very strange.

Went into BIOS and re-enabled the JMicron. Connected my backup data PATA IDE drive up, booted up and it was found in the BIOS. JMicron screen came up and said press any key. Did so.

PC then POST'ed again and when it gets to the screen where it says "Press ESC to boot", nothing happens when I press a key. Just goes back into a loop of POST's.

Got it eventually to boot to Vista after I removed the PATA IDE to check the jumper settings ( I'm assuming since its the only IDE device it should be set to "Master"??? ). It booted when the drive was sat out of the case next on my desk and I could see the drive in Windows.

Shut down, disconnected cables from the PATA HD, screwed it into the case and connected cables back up.

Same thing described above happened. Detects the drive in BIOS and at the POST, but wont boot to Vista.

Pretty much past caring now, given up.

I'm going to grab a new SATA hard drive tomorrow to use for data and backups and install that. I'll just move over all my backup data from the old PATA HD via an external enclosure.

Annoying though. :p

So there seems to be something funky going on when you connect the case headers? that's what you had a problem with yesterday when you couldn't get your IDE optical drive to work and by removing the case headers you got it working, now you say that the onboard LAN doesn't work when u connect them back up?

What are the case headers doing to your motherboard? Are you 100% sure your not being a total nOObzilla and plugging a USB header into the motherboards firewire port or trying to plug a firewire header into the motherboards USB port :o

Pretty much past caring now, given up.
Do not give in my son, take some rest and sleep and return to the battle refreshed! :p

Kudos to your troubleshooting methology, you are approaching it totally right although you need to adjust your pace to avoid fatigue and remember that patience is a virtue!

Thanks for the supportive words Wayne!!! :D

I'm sure I'm plugging the correct case headers in.

After I plugged the USB case header in, I fired the system up and stuck a USB 2Gb drive into it and it detected it and allowed me to copy files from it to my desktop. So no m8, I don't think I'm getting them mixed up. ;)

Really annoying as I hate having to scramble around at the rear of my case to plug in a pen drive.

Found another issue just now, USB related although I think this one might be more down to Vista rather than the mobo.

My Logitech USB headset doesnt work. Vista detects it but says the drivers are not installed ( error code 10 ).

Worked fine in XP, and after a bit of digging around it seems I'm not the only one with issues with Vista and Logitech headsets.

I'm assuming there are USB headsets available that will work with Vista or do none of them work via USB?.

Found another issue just now
I would step away from that motherboard before it bursts into flames! :D

Your having a right hard time of it there Draeger and I'm having problems keeping up with you haha! :p

I'm just wondering if this a new motherboard as I saw u mention something about *B-Grade* a few posts ago?

Anyhow just leave the case headers off the board for the moment if you haven't already done that. Is it just the USB case header you are using then? I have a similar ancient dragon case and that came with USB and fire-wire headers.

Whats the deal with the main case headers (PWR, RST, HDD, etc) are they all correctly plugged in?

Um what else hmmm . . . . . oh yeah, are you using the correct amount of brass standoffs between the case and the motherboard? hopefully you haven't got a spare brass standoff digging into the back of the mobo because there is no hole there?
