p5k-e wifi ...... bios ver 0503

Is anybody using a ide dvd drive with any of their P5K series? I have a ide dvd rom drive and a ide dvd burner at the moment and have a P5K-E coming tomorrow. I was reading in the other guys thread and apparently their is issues with only sata dvd drives working

I`m using the P5K-e, i used an IDE DVD Burner,it worked fine. But the IDE Socket is right at the bottom of the Mobo and it was a PITA.So i ditched it and went SATA.But the IDE for sure worked fine :)

Thats good to hear gurusan :) I have been having a search around on the net and by typing p5k ide dvd into yahoo search brings up loads of forum posts about people having issues with the ide slot not picking up ide drives??? Lets hope mine works fine, I have 2 ide dvd drives to try so fingers crossed I don't run into any problems.

Hey guys. I get my P5K vanilla tomorrow so i can finally build my pc!

Anyway i have been reading a lot of bad things to do with installing vista on a SATA hard disk.

I have a single SATA Samsung 320gb hard disk and i dont want to do raid.

If i leave it set as IDE in the BIOS will it still be installed as a SATA and be as fast as a SATA or do i need to set it as ACHI?

Do i need drivers etc? Can someone help me step-by-step, cheers all ;)

I can't give you a step by step guide unfortunately but I would stay away from ACHI at first, searching around the net seems to bring up loads of issues with enabling ACHI mode.

My P5K-E will be here tomorrow and I am going to install windows with Sata set to IDE mode and see how I go from there.

Edit: Also if you run into any problems with the bios not recognising your drives it seems to be advised to try the different slots, there are different colours on the Sata slots and apparently the red ones are for boot drives and the blacks ones for data.

Same here, but will it still be as fast? I chose a SATA drive to run as SATA, otherwise i would have saved £10 and got IDE.

Can someone clear this up please?

Just wanted to post in here for future reference.

My hassles documented in the other thread I started I initially thought were perhaps down to SATA/PATA problems.

It appears I was incorrect in that.

Wayne suggested looking at the DRAM timings and Voltage and he was *Spot on*. ;)

Adjusted the DRAM voltage up to 2.1v as the wee stickers on the side of the Geil 6400 Ultra low Latency RAM said and it upon a reboot ( after about two days of banging my head of the wall ) it flew through the Vista set up and installed without any hassle at all.

Still got a few things I want to do to this rig once I've got it set up and installed 100%.

Namely re-enable the JMicron Controller and plug a PATA backup HD into it to transfer saved data from my previous PC back and also I'm looking to O/C this baby a bit.

Expect posts back and silly questions from me shortly.

I R the n00b at this carry on. :D

Using a P5K-E here with 2 x IDE DVD drives (1 x NEC Burner, and 1 x MSI reader) both work fine.

Thats good to hear mate, the more I read upon it last night seems to point out that all the problems with dvd drives not being recognized stemmed from what sata slots were being used on the hdd's and not what interface is being used on the dvd player.

There are a few people saying that if a certain sata slot was being used (Example: slot number 3) then there could be issues with the board not picking up dvd/hdd's. I am just going to try slot 1 at first as I only have 1 hdd and take it from there.

Just got to wait for Citylink to turn up now...

**Looks out the window with fingers crossed**

:D

Got my P5K from citylink at 10:15, just waiting for my bro's girlfriend to bring over his old graphics card (x1800 xl). If she dosent come i will have to go on loads a bus journeys there and back...she better come!

Edit: Agr3sive are you going to install vista and leave it as IDE in the BIOS? Hmm i hope both our installs go ok, report back when your done.

I am going to install XP at first and then I might install Vista in a couple of weeks time, I have used Vista before and like it but I think I like XP more at present. I will be leaving it as ide in bios though for starters and will be connecting 1 Western Digital sata hdd and 1 Samsung ide dvdrw and see how I go from there.

I hope both our installs go well too buddy and I hope your graphics card turns up. Most of the time Citylink turns up at around 12ish round here so hopefully he will be here soon.

I am running 4 HDD's and a Pioneer 212 SATA drive in my system (P5K-E/WiFi-AP Bios 0603). Enabled AHCI and had no problems with XP at all. On installing Vista it would hang at the "Completing Installation" phase. Disable AHCI and boom, goes through without hassle.

You can very easily enable AHCI after installing XP or Vista. Download the following which is everything you need to switch to AHCI.

Enable_AHCI.rar

Might be worth saying my hard drives are on SATA ports 1-4 and the dvdrw is on port 6.

In the BIOS you can choose IDE/AHCI/RAID. I dont know if setting it to RAID automatically means its AHCI or not.

DVD drive is set to AHCI too, you cant set individual modes for each device.
