**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

Lastnight started on new build with P5K Premium Wi-Fi

Previosuly downloaded all latest software from Asus website

I'm new to SATA, not entirely sure I've followed correct procedure, would appreciate knowing if I'm on the right track, ps running a Q6600 but XP Pro 32 bit SP2 for now

SATA 2 = Western Digital 500Gb AAKS
SATA 4 = Pioneer DVD-RW
IDE = Western Digital 80Gb (single drive on master)
FDD = Sony 1.44Mb FDD IDE

1st boot went into bios and ammended the following :-

time, date, language, SATA 4 set to cd/dvd drive instead of auto
SATA left as IDE for now, not AHCI, all devices correctly discovered and listed
Disabled on board sound
1st boot device DVD
2nd boot device HDD

Saved, rebooted from DVD & installed XP Pro 32 bit with SP2

Then installed chipset/RAID related stuff :-

Intel_ChipsetInf_v8301013_includewin2003
Intel_INF_v8301013_2kxpvista
MicronJMB363_RAID_v117150

Then installed the Marvell & Realtek NIC drivers, mouse & keyboard, sound drivers (X-Fi 7.1 PCI card), DX9 & latest Foreceware drivers (8800 GTX)

Control panel-Hardware-Device List showed everything fine
My computer shows FDD, SATA HDD, SATA DVD-RW and FDD correctly

Noticed I'd also downloaded a file ICH9R_IMSM_Makedisk which appears to be RAID/AHCI related with a mention of "F6 Floppy............"

Is the above required at the start of the XP install (blue screens) is it required to allow the SATA config in bios to be changed to AHCI from IDE ? or can I change this in bios even now, I'm confused

ps not using RAID for the time being, just concerned I've missed wrong drivers or not using the AHCI setting in bios

Many thanks

ten80p - I'm not on quite the same board, but close enough p5k-e wifi, I installed XP, then used the disk that came with the board and used the install all option, beyond that I haven't installed any further board drivers and it all seems fine for me.

I believe you need to set AHCI prior to installing windows, you cant do it afterwards nor is there a simple way to make it work following an install with SATA set to IDE, but I'm not convinced it makes much in the way of difference which mode you use.

^ Thanks for quick reply
I always make it more difficult for myself, tend to not use the shipped installation CD/DVD and download individual latest files prior to build, fortunatley I only did a quick XP install to check everything so tonight I may create the 64bit floppy, change bios to AHCI then interrupt the install with the F6 and install them, then continue as before, like I say all seemed ok but I want to make sure I've done everything in the right order before I do my proper install at the weekend

Anyone else throw any help on this from their experiences ?

sorry if this is hijacking the thread, just got the above board and installed in a new build, got running under XP SP2 and thought would update BIOS as it was an older version. D/l'd latest BIOS, copied to USB Drive re-booted and went into BIOS and called up EZ-Flash. Backup'ed up old BIOS to USB drive, and then flashed new BIOS all went ok, did re-boot and never posted, tried to use the Crashfree to get it to recover and failed after numerous attempts. OCuk have replaced board but wondered if anyone has encountered this, is there an issue with EZ-flash, spotted thread to not use Windows method or was I just unlucky as when the new one comes will need to update BIOS if it is the 'older' version

Ta

I guess you were one of the unlucky ones but when you do get your new board..... if it's all working fine then there is no need to update bios.

Hey guys, got this board today and im liking it a lot. However i have a massive problem i cant find the cpu damper option in the bios. I have set ai overclocking to manual and have all the other options. I have also looked at screen shots of other peoples bios and gone to the right section but it it still not there  am i doing something really wrong? I have flashed to the latest bios from the asus website, the option cant have been removed can it?

I just got a P5K Deluxe today...I have a few quick questions.

I was quite comfortable with my P5B deluxe but this P5K has a few settings that I'm unfamiliar with.

-What is PLL voltage? What is safe and when should I up it?
-Clock Overcharging thingy? wtf is that?
-What are the NB and CPU voltage references?
-Transaction booster? ehh?

hey, yea sorry the page i was linking to didnt have competitors but i think the site itself does. I also thought id edited my post to be a bit more helpful, for some reason it doesnt seem to have worked! Hope the guide helped you some though.

Yeah I googled the link and found the guide. Thanks for that :)

But it doesn't mention PLL voltage? What is the CPU pll voltage?

Also what's the best bios at the moment to use for quads? I'm currently running 603 which is a bit old I think.

From :http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10802082&postcount=37

The PLL voltage is a key voltage to maintaining a stable FSB, will post link and info if can find it amongst my disorganized bookmarks. The original info came from extreme systems forums. W3bbo also posted about PLL on the forum not so long ago. The range used 1.5-1.7v. Although a sensible approch would be required ie a notch at a time. You can also raise your NB a notch and see if that offers stability.

Also check this thread.

Or just searching pll voltage on this forum gave a load of other results.

whats the diff with the black pearl edition? (Premium wifi)
The Black Pearl Edition has a few 'minor' changes that lend themselves to overclocking. . .

MOSFETs are found on the bottom of the P5K Deluxe. This can be a problem because there is no airflow to the bottom of the board, and things can get toasty down under when you crank up the speed. However, with the P5K Premium, everything has been placed on the top side only.

The difference that could be spotted would be the CPU area. Different inductors from the P5K Deluxe and Nikos MOSFETs are used on the P5K Premium. If you are sharp enough, you would notice a few additional capacitors placed around the board

Thanks a lot! I think im gonna go for the p5k e if i get one though :)

Do these board have issues with 4x1gb giel? Does it dampen overclocking or not work or anything? As the ocz 2x2gb is out of stock :(

Light's on but no one's home

Hopefully just built my first new system (correctly) using a P5K-E WiFi and Intel C2D 6750. Everything is connected and seated properly and went to turn it on and nothing happens, no fans spin at all! there's just green LED that comes on, I'm thinking that it might be my psu, so I'm gonna buy a new one.

What you think?

Just a quick check please guys.Just got the Corsair HX620 Watt PSU,i`m using the P5K-E WiFi Mobo. From the PSU there`s the standard 4 Pin power connector, and also the 8,am i ok to remove the cover that`s over the other 4 pin connectors on the Mobo, and use the 8 Pin?.Or should i stick with what i`m doing now, using the 4?
