**- Official ATI 3870X2 OVERCLOCKING Thread -**

well i have many times before.. also other people have.. butoh well :D.

anyway he could send a private message or email...

No he can't!

Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors

and

Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors

and

Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Seriously, i'd have a re-read of the rules!

Hi, what is the point with this post, it is suposed to be about 3870x2 overclocking, and already posters are offtopic with pathetic and childish bickering.
Jeez, you guys take the biscuit with all your willy waving:o

3870X2 specs state:

- Use up to four GPUs with an AMD 790FX based motherboard

Does that mean:
  • 4 GPUs will only work on an AMD 790FX based board; or
  • 4 GPUs will work on any board with two slots, but please buy an AMD 790FX one?

Well looking at the Gigabyte website, the new revision P35 DS4 states that it has xfirex capability.

Shame i got mine a bit soon really, oh well.

well 2 of 3870x2 = 4 gpus.. so you'll need a 790fx motherboard.. thats how i see it anyway..

my MSI K9A2 Platinum is 790fx crossfirex so if i buy 2 of theses i shouldn't have problems..

would 4 of theses cards work? maybe not because it'll be 8 gpus

CrossfireX only supports 4 GPU's.

So 2 x X2's, or 4 x XT's.

then so i would prefer 2x card instead of 4x single cards because my motherboard drops to 8x,8x,8x,8x....

but im guess a 3870x2 runs at 8x,8x ?? so it'll be the same really...

Gareth, at present the 3870x2 PLX (or PEX as read elsewhere) chipset divides the 16x lane in two, giving you effectively 8x 8x on the single board, which means that bandwidth wise, using 2 3870x2's will be the same as using 4 3870's on your board.

I'd be more interested in price and power consumption of 4 sepearate cards vs 2 3870x2's.

I would have some results up if the knuckle draggers at city link hadn't misplaced my package. "Durr one of the drivers might have it on his van phone back at 6.30pm". Its not even listed as being out for delivery, just that theyre not sure where it is.:mad:

Okay, just to throw a spanner in the works:

Ananadtech ran the 3870 X2 and benchmarked it successfully (with some pretty good results as it happens) in an nVidia 780i board, which goes to show you don't need a 'crossfire' certified board to run a single card, which begs the question, do you really need a quad-crossfire X certified board for two of the monsters? I'm sure we'll find out in March when the drivers for such things are supposed to come out. :)

The final answer is yes. Two 3870x2's can be run on any CrossfireX board, it's just that the drivers havn't yet been released to do so. I got that from the technicians here on the support line.
