*** Official BioShock 2 Thread ***

I got random crashes as well. There's a patch available, and make sure your graphics (ATI by any chance?) drivers are the latest. :)

Edit - to be honest though, doing that, I still got random crashes. Save often I guess is the policy.

Finished this last night and absolutely loved it; a worth successor to the original. Atmosphere, graphics, lighting, ambience, voice acting... all superb. B2 leaves other FPS games for dead. But as others have noted, it does have a few niggles:

  • The ability to wield plasmids and weaponry at the same time is a huge gamechanger and skews the balance of power so far in your direction that the enemies have no hope of beating you once you've gained a few upgrades

  • Zero scalability

  • Caps on money and equipment are far too low; I finished the game on maximum health, EVE and cash with bucketloads of stuff lying around that I couldn't pick up even if I'd wanted to

  • Too many resources available

  • Gameplay still too linear; you do have some freedom to complete tasks in different ways but at the end of the day you're still locked into a story and that story has little room for variation

  • Going outside Rapture was a nice touch but because it was little more than a plot advancement motif there was hardly anything out there to interact with, so it never lasted long enough to become interesting (I wanted underwater fights!)

  • The option of upgrading lower level weapons into super weapons almost defeats the purpose of having higher level super weapons in the first place; I spent all my time saving the super-weapons (rocket launcher, spear gun, etc.) for the big battles I believed were just around the corner, only to find that (a) there was no big battle or (b) there was a big battle, but I could win it with nothing more sophisticated than a hypnotised ally and an upgraded machine gun firing regular ammo

Having said that, the new weapons and upgrades were good fun.

I saved all the Little Sisters and finished with the "good" ending. Gathering ADAM was a fantastic new angle and provided some of the best fights in the game! There's nothing like setting up an ambush with plenty of traps and waiting for the Splicers to roll in. :D

Hypnotise is a wildly overpowered plasmid. At level 3 I could befriend a Brute or Big Daddy Alpha at the flick of a wrist and then sit back while he did most of the work. The moment he started running low on health, I'd just grab a new ally (Houdini Splicers for the win!) and start all over again.

Regretfully, this game has little replay value (same problem as the first one) which is a crying shame because in so many ways it is simply brilliant.

This game has reminded me of how much I hate GFWL and what an awful platform it is. Microsfot - you MUST try harder

I've not read through any of the posts above in case of spoilers but i just want to know if there is any benefit or outcome between saving all the little sisters, harvesting them all or random harvests?

I seem to be enjoying this more than the first game, I don't know why really. Like others have said the hacking has been done better and yeah, you do seem to be a little bit underpowered even though you're a big daddy. Maybe because I am only playing it in dribs and drabs rather than whole afternoons or evenings helps. The longest being about an hour and a half, don't quite get the time I used to.

Just finished it. The best gaming experience I've had since SOC, back in 2008. I preferred this quite a lot more than the first, not totally sure why. I got quite attached to the character you played and found the ending quite emotional. Near perfect.

Edit : I'll just add that the variety of combinations and replay value this game offers impressed me lots at times. It didn't seem to quite do that for me with the first game, not to the same extent anyway. Most of the game I played in one hour stints but in the end, today, I was glued to my lovely PC chair. I couldn't stop playing it and that rarely happens these days. :D

I also enjoyed it more than the first, which I thought was not as good as everyone made it out to be.

One of the top five contenders for this year I think (so far).

Neither are still no where near as good as System Shock 2 though ;)

Yeah I think the gameplay was better and even more varied, they really seem to have mastered the plasmid/weapons combinations - of which there are so many.

Plenty of replayability too - and I spent over 50 hours on my first playthrough!

I keep looking for SS2 but all I can find are second hand copies on play.com for example. Trouble is people charge what they like for it and although I really, really want to play it, I'm just not sure I wish to part with mega bucks for it. I hope Steam adds it to their library one day.

I gave up on this game on the PC last week. I just can't get into it the same way I could the first without being able sit down with the 360 pad, so going to wait for the 360 version to come down in price and try it again then. Shame really, I used to love playing games with the KB and M.

I got SS2 on ebay about a year ago for about £15. Played it original, all the old textures and everything and it was brilliant. Genuinely creepy.

What's the music like in think one?

I loved the music from Bioshock (and Fallout 3) is it more along the same lines?

Yeah, along similar lines I'd say. Put it this way, with most games I turn the music off. With this one I didn't. I don't remember 'that' much about the music to tell the truth since I was so engrossed in the game though I don't recall it being radically different. :)

What are people views on this game? ive not yet finished bioshock 1 i love it though. running through bioshock with silvers difficulty and balanced mod which makes the game solid and a miles better challenge. is bioshock 2 worth a buy?

I liked Bioshock 2 more than the first, dmxdex2020. Best game I've played since the Stalker games. If you loved the first I fail to see why you wouldn't really enjoy the second. Perhaps why I liked it so much was due to the gap I left between the two games. :)
