Official Bulldozer Reviews

Problem for AMD is, SandyBridge is almost a year old now, so Intel have had a long time to work on their own kit and make jumps.

Any improvements AMD make to BD are just going to be beaten by Intel, for less cost presumably.

Yup, seems amd will be playing catchup to intels older cpu's for a while to say the least.

The FX has almost 1bn more transistors (and worse performance) than the Intel parts as well, so not a cheap chip to manufacture.

Sanybridge also has integrated graphics and quicksync! They have massive space to spare in comparision to the FX.

Uses less power too, especially when overclocked.

It's not been a good month for tech lovers :( first the massive disappointment of the iPhone 4s and now bulldozer is a letdown too. Looks like I'll be going SB now. Anyone think the BD release may knock down the price of the 2500k a bit?

Unlikely, if anything it will push the 2500k price up now Intel know for sure they have nothing to worry about.

BD looks expensive to make so AMD can't sell it cheaply I think

Got to say I do feel a bit sorry for all the people who were waiting on this, but at least the waiting is over. They have been working on this for so long .

Theres probably gonna be a rush of i5 2500k orders now.
It does seem to be a great CPU, and with ivybridge not improving performance greatly its probably the one to buy.

Let's face it, these chips are disappointing, not terrible. They just don't quite match up to the sandy bridge chips. I'd guess you'd still be reasonably happy with the performance should you buy one. It's not like it's a pentium 2 chip or something :p

Indeed, a 6 core SandyBridge-E (although extortionately expensive) is going to massacre Bulldozer and will still consume far less power.

If I were AMD I would have re-spun Phenom X6 on 32nm and got back to the drawing boards with BD.

Intels bulldozer compared to AMDs bulldozer

I was waiting but as long as my new PC is up and running before Dec 22nd for "The Old Republic" I'm happy, looks like I'll be going 2500k.

On the bright side all this time waiting as given me extra savings, so I can add extras like SSD and new video card to my new build :D .

Some people have compared BD to NVidia's Fermi / GTX480 release, in the hope that things will get better with minor refreshes. Whilst there are a few similarities, there are also many differenciators. Fermi like BD was late to market and consumed more power than it's competitors. It also contained a much higher transistor count than the 5800's series.

The BIG difference is that Fermi in GTX480 form was significantly more powerfull than the 5800 cards, and remains more powerful than the 6900 series cards available one year later. Performance has never been an issue for Fermi, but it is THE MAIN ISSUE for DB.

Quite how BD can contain twice as many transistors as SB, share a similar process, and perform 20-30% slower in many tasks is behond belief. There have undoubtedly been some very very poor design decisions along the way.
