TECH

Optimisation work on our engine and rendering tech also continues, and you should experience further improvements to the performance of the game on medium spec PCs. See the specs details on the Steam Store page for more information regarding tech requirements. We’ve also fixed lots of bugs, however, please remember we’re still in Early Access, and so the oft-repeated caveats concerning game performance and BUGS still apply!

If you already own the game and your Steam update is set to run automatically, then you won’t have to lift a finger; all these new goodies will be downloaded the next time you run Carmageddon: Reincarnation!

It looks good, but it doesn't look like it has the same feel as the originals. They had lots of charm and were relatively clean and simple on the surface, whereas this loses it all in favour of explosive effects.

And £20 is far too much for an early access version of a remake.

I won't be getting this on early access, but I'm looking forward to picking it up after I've completed GTA5 (a terrible move to release it at the same time tbh!)

As a Carmageddon fan since owning the original MS-DOS version in 1997 here are my thoughts....

It's Carmageddon all right, it feels like a mixture of Carmageddon and Carmageddon II.

Things I am happy with...

  • The handling of the cars. It feels very similar to the previous games.
  • The re-made car models are faithful to the originals.
  • Some of the new power ups are fantastic.
  • Track design is awesome with plenty of scope and much to do.
  • I like the variety of challenges in the career mode.
  • Full mod support.

Things I'm not happy with...

  • The graphics. It looks like a 2007 game, the lighting is flat and the performance does not justify the last gen graphics.
  • Music is hit and miss, some are good some are crap. I will be importing the soundtracks from Carma 1 and 2.
  • The levels lack the atmosphere of the first two games.
  • Car count and track variety is on par with Carmageddon but lower than those in Carmageddon II.
  • Ped count is way down on the previous games.
  • The cell shaded power ups.

It's still fairly days but overall it still feels like Carmageddon and is a welcome addition to the original two. I'm sure as time goes on and they receive feedback from the community some of the above points will be resolved.

Couldn't resist for £10, ah nostalgia. Game works fine for me on my 2 years old computer. Loading times are long and gameplay is just like the originals. Only played three maps but will play some more this weekend :)

I decided it was worth it at £10.

Carma2 is as good as ever... but Carma Reincarnation is woeful. It's got none of the charm of a Carma game. It feels souless. The graphics are utterly woeful, yet the download is 13gb and it takes a lot of juice. Loading a map, and I with I was exaggerating here, takes minutes. Minutes! Plural!

The menu system is poor, in that if you click outside of a pretty small square, it minimises the game and returns to the desktop.

This is one of the worst games I've played in the last 10 years and it's only redeemed by the fact you get Carma2. Carma1 would be good too, but it's a poor Dosbox version - even the free Android version is vastly superior to this!

All they had to do was bring Carma and Carma2 up to date, to keep the same feel, but bump up the polygons and textures and ensure compatibility. That would be worth £5. This, a new game, isn't worth playing for free. It feels like an early alpha, so it's worrying that this is a beta, suggesting it's not far from the "finished" product. I wish I could get my money back, and I never thought I'd say that about a Carma game. :(

I just realised I posted last in this and didn't say what the first update was like! It was pretty decent to be fair, but now they've released Update #2! I'm downloading it at the moment, all 6.9Gbs :o

The biggest update is they're in the first stage of multithreading the engine. They've 'decoupled the renderer' which they say has given significant framerate improvements. There's also a ton of other stuff which they've done, listed here.

I'll give it a go and let you guys know how it runs!

This update #2 is a massive improvement over the last update, much more playable and no framerate issues even with a reasonable amount of options on, using an old Mac Pro 3,1 with 2x Quad Xeon 2.8, 16gb Ram, GTX970 4gb at 2560x1440 and it doesn't seem drop below 60FPS... Ill push it later and see if I can manage 4K at 30+ FPS
