Hi all

I fancy trying DCS as the modules are on Steam sale this weekend.

Can anyone spec me a few modules for jet based gameplay, would the F18 hornet, Supercarrier and Syria map work well together?

I'm open to a ww2 spec also but I have 'everything' on Il-2 so would rather try Jets but as I said open to offers!

The F18 and Supercarrier are a VERY good call. After that, it's either Syria or Persian Gulf. Both are good, just a little different in visual presentation.

Ref WW2, all of the modules are IMO pretty good and each has their own pros and cons. It's rather a question of your preference, i.e. allies or axis, primarily fighter, primarily strike, or a bit of both.

Thankyou for your thoughts. They do seem a good combo.

One thing I will say is that WW2 is a different kettle of fish in DCS vs IL2 and you’ll have to learn the ins and outs of the particular plane much more.

In that sense I think the WW2 planes are quite a good intro to DCS as while they have systems depth, the systems are of course relatively simple compared to more modern counterparts where you’ll have to spend longer learning how to operate them.

Can you recommend a plane/map combo? I also note their is a ww2 assets pack is that worth it?

I prefer allied planes but do love a FW 190 and Stuka in il-2

I'm no DCS expert so I would defer to others but I personally like the Normandy map for WW2 and I'd say the WW2 assets pack is a must have if the WW2 fighters are something that interests you.

Ultimately the map is irrelevant beyond cosmetics though as most maps are well suited to WW2 scenarios.... so if I had to choose I'd pick my favourite fighter and the WW2 assets pack only.

The F18 is awesome, but I still haven't yet had time to actually sit down and get to grips with it beyond the basics.

It is also worth getting the free T-45 mod. No other modules needed and carrier capable :)

This is worth remembering, as there are now several good free “mod” aircraft.

If you’re intent is WW2, the Normandy map is a very good plan as that’s where the best online servers are, eg Storm of War. Note that you should expect to get owned in DCS multiplayer in PVP whilst you learn the ropes.

The Channel map is popular with my squad. For allied planes the P-47 is a bit tricky to learn, but several squad members say its better the GBS ones. If you do solo then have a look at the campaigns and see what map/assets/planes you need.

Only just got around to trying the new 2.7 Open beta. It's 90GB before I even install the few modules I've got!
90GB?! Is that normal for this new beta version?

Ok thanks fellas. Games are getting too big these days (And I've got a 1TB M2 drive and another 4 TB of SSD space for games, and that's still pushing it)

Is there a dynamic campaign for DCS?
When you're feeling comfortable get into multiplayer and look for Blue flag servers, dynamic campaign 24/7, some great guys on there, loads of help and you'll learn a lot.
Though don't blame me for the addiction when you end up buying more modules because the missions give roles for all modules.
operation:BLUE FLAG (buddyspike.net)

It's leaps and bounds above the il2 one. The only thing thing that I am jealous of il2 is they have a razor back.

The jug is my favourite plane of all time anyway let alone in DCS, but you are probably right about the pilot work load for learning in, so I would say go for the pony or spit first

Wondering if you want that Aircraft/Terrain/Module?

DCS Free to Play program. All modules are free for 2 weeks. The 2 Weeks refreshes every 6 months.

Also you first purchase is 50% off, even if you buy everything in one go.
