*****Official Deus Ex 3: Human Revolution discussion thread*****

You can tell this is for console users, things you can use have an abnormal glow to them.

Haha! Because no PC game has ever had a visual effect on interactable items before? Look, obviously you don't have to like it. But this association of 'crap design choice = console' is very, very tiresome.

And for the record, I love Deus Ex, play it every year or so as I imagine many others do. The first level is easily my least favourite of the whole game.

What didn't you like about it?

Hong Kong was a great level. 1 time i decided to head back into Versalife using the front door... safe to say the Commandos inside weren't all that friendly... Just gave the impression that they'd tried to make it feel like you were in a city. The market traders, police station, the triads, maintanence access to the destroyed, flooded tunnel, small restuarants, etc.

Yeah, I found a hidden aug canister in the collapsed tunnel in my recent playthrough (had to fight off some very fast moving karkians first). On to the naval base now to destroy the freighter :p.

Small touches like seeing the captain's email to his daughter, bunk beds and lockers, bathrooms etc made the game world feel much more realistic than a typical shooter of the time. Oh, and the weapon mods were nice too, combining them with skill upgrades and the regen aug practically made you a walking tank in the endgame :D

Back on topic, this seems interesting:

Unfortunately on my latest playthrough (KO only except animals since they 'die' anyway) i forgot to visit the police stations evidence lockup ><
The Karkians didn't stand much chance vs a Dragons Tooth sword, master Melee and the melee damage aug at lvl3 or something. Great fun because i can destroy practically anything mechanical with health (bar bots i guess), cameras, turrets or doors. You learn something new every playthrough :p Also nothing beats Run Silent and sprinting around with a Baton clobbering people in the back of the head for a 1 hit KO :D Think my last save was as i sprinted down the dockfront KOing the guards, hehe.

Yeah they did treat people more like humans that have lives other than working as a generic soldier in an evil organisation bent on conspiracies to run the world.

to be fair the fact the demonstration video for deus Ex's squeal, which we've been promised will be a proper pc game and at the beginning we were promised would be a pc exclusive because it was too complicated to work on the consoles is being filmed a console does really suggest it's been dumbed down since they started.

The other thing I didn't find until recently was the MJ12 troops holding a hostage in the New York sewers and the datapads concerning drugging the water supply there.

You mean the inital trip to the city? You can only get that if you get into Smugglers (either entrance) and get the key from him.

Which reminds me, Invisible War's levels were noticably smaller than the original, a large part of why it was a step down. There wasn't much to explore outside of the main plot. Hopefully DE3 remedies that problem...

Dues Ex, wow, what a magnificent game. Easily the best FPS/RPG out there to date imo. Easily.

Saddens me that Dues Ex 3 won't be anything like that. I lent it out to several of my mates, even my boss...None of them got past the first level :/

Pityful.

The openness was 1 of the things that made Deus Ex. First level, Liberty Island, large open area, secondary objectives you didn't have to do, 'secret' areas. Second level, Battery Park, multiple ways into the compound, a hidden back door that you could learn about if you gave a kid some food, a few ways around the base, followed by multiple ways to deal with the hostage situation, part two in Hells Kitchen, lots of sidequests and hidden/secret areas if you bothered to look, so many ways to the NSF compound and around the rooftops, several points of entry and methods of blowing the generator.

If they get that right they are on to something.

I'm not so sure it was looking at it again. Tutorials tend to highlight things for a purpose, not just automatically. They say 'go here' and highlight a door or 'move this object' and highlight the object. Plus theres the glaring popup box telling you to activate a tutorial about guards (at least i assume thats what it means)/

Yeah I am with you about what you say about Deus Ex having the openess that gave the player freedom to explore and tackle things in many different approaches. For me, even if they do some of that, I'll be happy. It won't be another 'Deus Ex' that's just impossible I believe - the standard has been set so high from that game that I doubt it will be done again in a game for a while - after all this dumbed down 'consolising' we see with PC Games these days. I see it in Deus Ex 3, I will be totally honest (I'm not turning a blind a eye on it) but I also don't see it being as bad as Invisible War, which I am actually very chuffed about. In my eyes Invisible is only bad compared to the original, and it is a great game if you consider it being standalone game from the Deus Ex universe. With Deus Ex 3, it seems a hybrid of things from the first and second game and while still not exactly perfect, I still think it will be a good game, just not a masterpiece.;)

+1. Fully agree. Deus Ex wont be matched. Anyone who was hoping this sequal was going to come near it at any point was kidding themselves. Immense gaming perfection (:D) + 10 years of growing nostalgia is impossible to match. The second, for all its faults, was still a great game and I was happy with it. I will wait and see, if the story is good and the gameplay is deus ex (different paths, random easter eggs, a few side quests) then I will be happy.

What didn't you like about it?

Combat felt a bit lacklustre, lack of ammo, just generally didn't feel like there was enough interaction going on outside of UNATCO from what I recall. I much prefer the city environments compared to the open areas of Liberty Island.

It may not have helped that having played Invisible War first, to start with I was getting used to the more clunky inventory etc, which may have marred my enjoyment of the early part of the game.

*shrug* i never had a problem with the lack of ammo. If anything it was the lack of accuracy but then its the first level and you're a 'rookie'... and you can always upgrade Pistol to Advanced before you start anyway.
I take your point that it was rather empty though. Battery Park was also a dissapointment too in that respect, the huge area and 90% of it had nothing of any interest in it.

The lack of ammo in Deus Ex didn't bother me, It's a long time since i've played it but I seem to remember my chosen method of combat was to crouch, creep around and hit enemies with the stun gun. I must have taken out 100's of enemy npc's this way, I think the game really rewarded tactical style stealth play. Fingers crossed here for a return of the stun gun in Human Revolution.

With the stun gun? If there was a weapon that lacked ammo the Riot Prod comes right after the Flamethrower and Plasma Rifle. It tended to take 1 or 2 hits to KOs, even 3 or 4 if you didn't spec highly in melee weapons or were against Commandos or MiB's and there wasn't that much available.

If there was 1 problem with trying to play stealthily, it was the hitbox for melee weapons. Even if they don't see you its so easy for it to not register properly and not KO them in 1 hit, not a problem with the Riot Prod but the Baton it was instant death. Course i could just go around with the Dragons Tooth Sword and instagib everyone but i was trying for no killing :p

It should be noted that it is still 5 months from release which gives them time to alter some of the things we've seen, such as the super fast ladder animation or ability to add in a graphics option to turn interactivity halos off. It won't be enough time to fundermentaly change the gameplay or design ethos though so takedowns will remain.

We also don't know how old this build of the game was and therefore whether some of the issues you are discussing have already changed. Personally i didnt like the 'Talking Head' communications method as it didnt really fit in with the overall asthetic

I read a PC Gamer UK preview which expressed a worry about the quality of the AI which although in the original a kooky AI would lead to interesting situations currently Human Revolutions AI is between this and just bad AI pathing.

Personally I'm looking forward to it. What I've seen and read I like and as long as it has a strong narrative (which is important to me) the world is immersive and the gameplay enjoyable I'll be purchasing

Told you it was a long time ago:o,yeah, stun/riot prod it was. Worked really well for me and generally took enemies down easily, wasn't there a tranquilizer dart gun too?

I know but i was saying that there really isn't that much ammo for it and with hitbox 'instant takedown' problems making your limited ammo get stretched even further.

Yeah mini crossbow was epic. Still don't understand the point of Flare darts though :p
