Official Devils Canyon review thread

4.0Ghz + 4.4Ghz turbo. 88c doesn't seem to bad with those clocks on a stock cooler.

With a decent cooling setup, these could still be decent imho.

I know. Out of sheer curiosity it would be interesting to compare the 4770K with the 4790K at the same clocks/voltages. Does that fancypants new TIM actually make a difference?

It seems ******** awful to me, just like haswell and ivy. As I speculated in an earlier thread, the 'improved' TIM likely means cheese paste has been swapped for toothpaste.

My 3770k dropped by ~20C under load after replacing the TIM with LiquidMetal Ultra and removing the glue, and that is not an atypical result.

Judging by the figure of 88C, I would guess DC will benefit similarly.

Intel Devil’s Canyon Overclocking:

We will start seeing some official results in just a few minutes since the Devil’s Canyon OC event hosted by Intel is going to begin soon. Infact, we already have a verified 5 GHz result of the Core i7-4790K which was maintained at 1.400V from Overclock.net forums user “Dhenzjhen@OCN”. The chip was able to deliver a score of 16285 3D Marks in 3DMark 05 which heavily relies on the CPU performance. From what i’ve heard, this overclock was done on air so we can be looking at some big numbers when LN 2 cooling comes in to action.

If nothing has changed lithographically, just new paste and some smoother power delivery, I wouldn't hold out for super boosts to overclock ability. Their fabrication is still the same, optimized for power over hertz, as before.

Probably 1.300 max on air for 24/7 use. What ive seen advised on here by 8 Pack for current hw chips.

Thats for current chips, with better TIM, reduced heat could possibly allow 1.350-1.400 for 2/7 use.

Just need wait and see some 8Pack Reviews :)

88oC temps as an average ? did they hire some AMD peeps or something.... what a complete letdown.

Yes I would tend to agree, but...

It must be remembered that this was on a stock cooler and also, it is turbo'ing to 4.4Ghz at stock as opposed to 3.9Ghz of the 4770K. I wonder what temps would reach at 4.4Ghz on 4770K with stock cooler?

that's not too bad IF it was using stock cooler, you can blow on the chip and cool it better than those:D

They have been banging on about improved TIM etc, so I would have hoped to see a lot better temps than 88oC. Maybe I was expecting too much.

I'd be surprised to see that big a step in 24/7 voltages just with improved TIM, but then again I doubt Intels claims around the new TIM being a match for solder.
