Official Devils Canyon review thread

Literally just linked that in another thread.

Like I said from the very first rumour, scaremongering.

This "launch" has been VERY unique.

It's literally been a none event, ironically after some of the most "hype" I've seen from Intel.
We've had no reviews (Except Hexus) and NO stock.

I mean, this has to go down as one of the worst "launches" (Hell, even PAPER LAUNCH) I've ever witnessed!!

LOL Great minds think alike......

Like I also said in another thread, a lot of people sold up and rushed out to buy Z97 boards to support these new CPU's, but Intel never said they wouldn't work on Z87, I know they never said they would either, but they wouldn't really be a 4th Gen chip if they didn't, and Intel didn't do anything wrong by keeping tight lipped on it.

I guess with Intel keeping quiet is one way to get people worried about price hypes and rush out to buy their new chipset as soon as possible, if I just released a new chipset, I would probably keep quiet about the chips too, great way to sell the new boards, and deceived nobody.

The 4970k will surely produce more heat though as it has a higher clock speed and a higher tdp.

Surely the sensible comparison would be between a 4770k and a 4790k both running at 4.4Ghz and see what the heat for both is like then. Or down clock the DC to 3.9Ghz...

If the voltages are different it doesnt matter if the clock speeds are the same or not.

Thats why matching them on frequency is surely the best guide? Declock the DC to 3.9Ghz and reduce voltage to the same that the 4770k requires

I ran my 4770K @4.4 with the stock cooler before i changed to the H100, volts were 1.175 and temps hit around the same 85-90c.

Seeing as these will work with my board i think, depending on the reviews, i'll upgrade and sell my 4770k, but only if the majority of chips hit between 4.7-5.0Ghz.

Pretty amazing voltage you have on that 4770k. I wouldn't sell it. Mine won't do 4.4Ghz without bumping up the voltage to 1.3v.

Cheers bud, it's definitely a decent chip, which makes the whole 'upgrading' to devils canyon even harder, although tbh, I probably will upgrade.

If not DC then sell the lot and move to Haswell e.

Well that depends on how overclockable the 4790k is though

I have a water setup and a pretty naff 4770k so I have two options, providing the link at the top is correct and my board does indeed support the 4790k.

De-lid my 4770k to reduce temps so I can up the voltages or sell the 4770k and grab a 4790k with better TIM to start with.

The fact that the CPUs are basically the same performance wise clock for clock doesn't bother me. The ability to push the chips further does

^^Agree with this, i have a very hot running 4770k, clocks ok ish. Only options are to risk a delid or buy a 4790k. No point spending money on custom wc as it wont help much at all.

Personally i'd rather not de-lid my 4770k purely because selling it on at a later date could be tricky but I have dual 360 radiators for my GPUs and CPU and its frustrating to say the least knowing that I could knock off around 20 degrees from the CPU just by using good TIM.

Would delidded CPU actually sell for less than the ones there weren't?

I mean if you have a delidded working CPU, it has basically already taken the risk of delidding out of the equation. Wouldn't it actually worth more, similar to how people were willing to pay the price premium for the 290 pre-flashed to 290x from OcUK?

I mean 15C or more lower temp under load could be very tempting to people who don't have the courage to delid the CPU themselves?

I suppose but it's like modding a car.

If you sell a standard car in good condition it would appeal to more people than a car that was in the same condition (if not better) but had been modded.

Depends whos around at the time and is looking for a CPU.
