I really hope the upgrade system doesnt slow the game pace down. I can see it slowing it down as you will stop to mess around with what is the best setting. Doom needs to be kept fast and un-complicated as possible IMO
Pre-loading now too so will find out in a couple of days
I think if they adjust the balance of the game, it could be interesting.
For one, Doom was not always about crazy, frenetic action like some people seem to assume is the case. In fact, it was actually something of a horror game, not in the strictest sense, but it was known as much for its scary atmosphere and enemies as it was for the action. I can remember being a kid and the first moment I encountered a pinky demon or the Barons of Hell in 1-8. Was terrifying stuff back in the day.
Secondly, keyboard-only was the main way to play when it first came out. This super high speed aiming was not the norm. It really took the multiplayer side of things to start taking off before mouse control started to become a more popular way to play. And of course, it's the ideal way to handle Nightmare difficulty in the games as they get pretty crazy.
Basically, Doom is NOT all about fast-flying action. I know that's what a lot of people enjoy about them nowadays, especially with the evolution of the genre into the Quake series and whatnot, but I also think that it's largely because Doom has lost most of its 'impressiveness' visually and atmospherically due to age.
What I think would be cool is if the game did start out a bit slower and then as you progress and upgrade the character, things start to really ramp up. So you get the bit slower, more atmospheric side and then by the end, the game is more the fast action-style that many enjoy. That might be a bit polarizing for some, but as somebody who can appreciate both, I think it'd be pretty cool.
That, or maybe we're just seeing high difficulty gameplay, which is more suited to fast-speed upgrades, while lower difficulty levels have less enemies and can be dealt with playing slower if you really want to. I mean, the game does have to cater to gamepad users somehow, ya know?
I dunno. It'll be interesting. Looking forward to reviews.
