**Official Duke Nukem Forever Thread**

I have a GTX460 and on a 24" screen it looks superb. In The Hive I was constantly oohing and ahhing at the lighting and atmospheric effects.

And I'm hard to please when it comes to visuals.

Anyone who says otherwise is a fool!

That's most likely the best looking bit in the game. What about the Vegas strip? With the literally square buses? Game is all over the place visually, and the lasting impression is that it's pretty ropey.

There's a few good moments, but overall this game is a relic. The gameplay is a mish mash of ideas with no clear vision, the level design is largely dated, and everything duke says or does just isn't funny.

Even stupid is more sophisticated than this. See Bulletstorm, Serious Sam, etc . . .

I'm a GFX whore and DNF looks like crap, I like decent gameplay as well and DNF plays like crap with its regen health, two gun limit and linear map design. I give it 4/10.

Really wouldn't suprise me if you've not played it at all.

Well i agree with RavenXXX2, i've played a lot of the game but got so bored i didnt finish it, it was a struggle to keep going in the hope that it would get better. I laughed once at the game, after the monster truck fiasco of "drive with moronic controls/physics for 2 minutes, run out of fuel, kill some baddies, pick up fuel, repeat" at the end the "shame, it had such good mileage". I'm hoping they made the joke because they realised how dumb that whole segment was, stopping twice for fuel i can see is fine but like 5 times is mindless repetition and boring.

The 2 guns thing IS a stupid idea, after a while i just stuck with pistol and devastator, the pistol kills anything non-boss and the devastator sorts the bosses out with ease, also having infinite ammo at each boss is cringeworthy with the combo.

The game itself is no challenge at all, i know theres an extra level of difficulty but on my first play of the game on the hardest you can play initially i've died once, in the hive vs the 3 octobrain things because i wasnt watching.

So yeah, cant really remember how far i got, i remember shooting down ships with big turrets for a while and the same again from inside a transport ship, something to do with the president, no idea which order they were in ..... thats how engaging the storyline is

i'll admit 3.5 might be a little low for the game, perhaps a 4/10 is a better estimate, and this is from a lover of fps games.

ps. i didnt mention graphics because graphics dont bother me, but from a technical point of view theyre pretty bad.

Vegas was OK, I didn't pay attention to the buses, more the blocky plants when you're mini Duke.

Sill, the enjoyment factor was there for me. I am a Duke fan and moreso, an old skool shooter fan as that's the era I grew up in and have the most memory of so I fit right at home with this kind of game and it seems a lot of others do too.

- Generally pleasing visuals
- Gags
- Titties
- Massive bosses
- Consistent pacing to the combat system, yes I know it only allows 2 weapons and even Duke jokes about wanting 3 guns at a time at one point but it's fine...
- References to other games and media throughout the game

It's all good.

Not like my review then? let me guess you payed full price for DNF.

My brother was suckered in to buying it on steam so I have no problem reviewing the game for what it is, purchase justification syndrome does not come in to it.:D

You posted a review? I saw you posted a bunch of ill-considered rhetoric? Was that it? Oh!

I appreciate what you're saying. I wasn't a huge fan of the original, but played it a lot regardless and respect a lot of what it did.

A lot of it comes down to taste, but there's some stuff that is just *wrong* as far as I'm concerned. For example, the 'old skool shooter' vibe.

Now the enemies, and general setups lend themselves to this kind of feel. However, the often cramped environments, regenerating health (combined with large damage per enemy), two weapon limit (and small amounts of ammo per weapon) are all completely opposed to this style of play. These are clearly just things they slapped on to stay in line with modern shooters, without considering the implications of each of these mechanics.

The boss encounters, while visually impressive are mechanically dull. Here's how I beat every boss in the game:

Load up from infinite ammo crate,
circle around the boss holding down the fire button,
run out of ammo,
Load up from infinite ammo crate,

The fact there are so many of these weapons crates points to a massive plaster being placed over the game where there's supposed to be balance.

The gags and stuff are down to taste, I found them either outdated, stale, or borderline offensive. I tend to echo the comments in some reviews about the alien ship/impregnation sections, they are really quite distasteful, and this kind of attitude to women I just find disgusting. Compare and contrast this games handling of woman and 'low brow' humor with that of Bulletstorm for example. I'd really not want to meet anyone that wrote the dialogue/story for Duke.

The way I look at it, is this:

As someone who works in the industry, is this really how far we've come? If someone played this as their first ever game, we'd loose them forever. It's embarrassing, and we just don't need it anymore. This isn't about games needing to be 'serious' or plumbing the depths of what it is to be human. Bayonetta isn't serious, Serious Sam isn't serious, Bulletstorm isn't serious. But in comparison to this game they have style, clear direction (both in terms of art and design) and most importantly have depth to the gameplay.

I errr, didn't intend for this to turn into a big rant, and it's really not aimed at you Khaaan :o

Hah, since when has Duke been about well written scripts for the gag lines? :D Don't know what universe you've played previous games in!

Well, to state the obvious, the previous game was quite some time ago. I would hope for some improvement! The standards against which it is judged are so much higher these days.

Well no, as 3d realms and gearbox both stated they were keeping the game true to Duke form and that's what we got. Everyone knew what was being released when gearbox t9k over as they told us exactly!

Ummm... The universe where poorly written scripts and dialog come across as tacky and basically unnecessary?

You realise this is duke we're on about right?

This was on a different level than the original Duke. It's "beyond" Duke and into a whole other uncomfortable territory.

In Duke 3D he was a hard-ass dude who liked his drinks, his cigars, his strippers and all the finer things in life.

While DNF does have the movie-laden one-liners and tough-guy wisecracks (that fit perfectly with the Duke character), it also veers further off into a completely disrespectful, and borderline misogynist, area that the original wisely drew the line before.

It's Duke, sure -- but it's Duke as envisioned through the eyes of blue-balled 14-year-old boy who sure as **** wouldn't have any level of success saying "Shake it, baby!"

You realise this is duke we're on about right?

Look, I realise Duke is aimed at being politically incorrect and somewhat juvenile, and while some of the scripted scenes and lines were funny, personally I found a lot of them weak and tacky. And IMHO there was no need for this, as "politically incorrect and somewhat juvenile" can still be astute and clever and actually funny :)

I'm with Kahn on this.

Just because times have changed, doesn't mean Duke should have.

If theyed bought the game out to be politically correct (especially regarding Dukes attitudes) it just wouldn't have been Duke at all.

Who's suggesting they change it to being polically correct? Just make the damn stuff funny and not as if a bunch of 12yr olds have written it at times... :)

Come on, some of it was very poorly written and scripted... And could easily have been done to far better effect...

Well didn't someone mention attitudes toward women and other such? Sounds like they want to ramp it up to being PC. Its not the best written, but it didn't have to be for me. Having some epic deep plot, or finely subtle humour would have stopped it being Duke for me. :)

I think it was just some of the adult natured scenes and dialog that grated for me the most.

eg: The opening Holsum Twins scene seemed clumsey... And the dancer reward dialog just seemed clunky too. That ,and the fact the graphics made the whole debacle slightly scary rather than in anyway titillating (I think it was their eyes that were the most scary thing?).

Hopefully the writing/pacing/graphics will be improved for the next one. I don't care how childish, or un-PC it is, as long as it's done well :)

Anyway, let's hope the sales merit another one...
