Official E3 2016 thread.

Loved Morrowind, spent a ridiculous amount of time in that game, the interface and crap animations were acceptable back then though. They really haven't improved it since.

If they properly revamped the engine it would be fantastic, but they don't seem to rate it a priority.

Yes, CD Project Red need to loan the use of their engine to Bethesda ;)

And the ****e combat. Why does nobody else have an issue with this?!! I'm starting to think I may be a grumpy old ****!

Combat was pretty poor yeah, if was acceptable in Oblivion, but on next gen it needs loads of work, which is why i hated FO4 as well.

The only reason I spent 50 hours in Skyrim was because I was using the conjured bow for most of the game and that was pretty fun. The melee combat is terrible, the copy/paste dungeon and enemy design is lazy at best and the world felt rather empty considering it's size. I enjoyed my time but I doubt I'll go through the main story again.

I put in around 300 hours into the original Skyrim on PC, no mods. Back on release I thought it was awesome. I loved Morrowind and Oblivion so I guess some of the love was rose tinted.

I tried playing Skyrim again last year and man it's bad. As others have mentioned, compared to the witcher series it is rubbish. That said I do enjoy the scenery and landscapes in Skyrim though even if they are blurry vision. I do know you can mod it to make it look insanely pretty but I don't have the time. I also enjoy the lore and the different civilisations and races and how distinct they are.

Combat has never been an issue for me on Skyrim per se, but I also tend to agree with others that it is pretty poor compared to modern titles.

Overall, though, it's just another remake cash in by the sound of it. Why not a new elder scrolls game?

I doubt I will be buying it personally, not unless there are some major improvements, but I can see how some people might want it if they didn't play it on the PC. But for full asking price I would expect to see some additional content and a major graphics overhaul as well as improvements in gameplay. Otherwise it would be simply charging money for old rope.

I've got a feeling that combat in The Elder Scrolls will never change. The clumsy first-person view is ingrained in the identity of the series.

The Witcher 3 just shows TES up badly. I know it's a little unfair to compare it to Skyrim, but; better combat, better story, better world and a true sense of a 'living' environment. While TESVI could address some of those areas, keeping first person view will put it at a disadvantage in combat, and creating your own hero will always make it more difficult to tell a compelling story.

Thing is, though, Skyrim has built in 3rd person view which could easily be adapted to improve combat. 1st person view could remain to enjoy the scenery and interacting with NPC's in towns etc. I suppose a hybrid combat system could be used to cater for the preferences of 1st vs 3rd person modes.

In a way, it sounds good that I've not played The Witcher 3. That way I can go enjoy Skyrim again and then play TW3 after it. :p

Indeed, if they improve it over the original it may well be an enjoyable game for you. I doubt it will be Witcher good though. I admit I have a soft spot for TES series. Personally, though, I'd rather see a remake of Morrowind! :p

There's little doubt they're working on a new Elder Scrolls. But they are huge games with ridiculous amounts of content and take years to make.

As for this being a cash-in, I'm sure additional 'easy' revenue is a big motivator(though I think they're not half as easy as many gamers would think), but if they can do mods ala Fallout 4 for the consoles, then I think that a whole lot of people would really appreciate it.

NO NO NO. They've already made more concessions to 3rd person than they should have. The games are supposed to be immersive and 1st person is critical for that. 3rd person-only combat would be the worst thing that could happen to the series.

Im not sure 1st person is ever going to stand up in terms of a hand to hand combat system though. On one hand if they make a technical 1st person combat system it raises the skill ceiling to a level that could make gameplay feel tedious which will draw a lot of criticism. On the other, if they keep things similar to the rest of TES series and get criticised for lack luster clunky combat.

I personally feel that a hybrid system could be a way to go. That way you can cater for both camps and can have combat mechanics that cater for the play styles of 1st and 3rd person fans. I'm not saying you can't have a 1st person RPG that works, but the widely accepted standard is 3rd person and for good reason. I think modern games are just as immersive in 3rd person. Can you really say The Witcher 3 was not immersive? I feel that the immersive experience is not simply whether a game is 1st or 3rd person, it is about story, lore, music and the whether the world itself is believable. Compare Skyrim to TW3 for example and the difference in the detail of towns is night and day. OK it is an unfair comparison but you can see what im getting at. TES games have always lacked that element of detailed and believable 'life' going on around the protagonist. Another obstacle for TES games has always been that you play as you. Not a character you can bond with. Go on a journey with. Care about. To me that is the single biggest challenge facing the next TES game and whether it is 1st/3rd person really becomes a moot point.

Having said that, if 1st person really is so important to the brand identity then they should draw a line in the sand and run with it. Remove 3rd person completely. Take a chance. Be ambitious and to hell with the critics! :)

First person games are my first love, so it would work for me. But the bar has been set by CDPR and TW3, and for better or worse that is what all new RPG releases will be judged against.
