*** Official EverQuest Next Thread ***

correct, imo its 2 games, "EQ landmark" is one for crafters and house designers / decorators. ( heavy on crafting items and being an ingame supplier of goods etc as the devs say theres allot of players who just love crafting etc and for that reason they went all out in developing lots for them todo )

then the main game "EQ next" is the action/rpg/adventure part.

i bet they will bring early acces parts out for "EQ next" which is what most people want.

i definately will not be paying a penny to develop 1/2 the game i have no interest or time to play, but will be prepared to pay a small amount for early access for "EQ next" just to check how it runs on my pc and what it looks like visually ( hopefully its not going to be bioware star wars cartoon graphics with low res mode ) if it fails theres allways elder scrolls etc etc

Since this is the official EQ:N thread...

John Smedley has left the EQ:N team! I think this calls for celebration!

Smed was everything that was wrong with SoE, and EverQuest in its later years. The man was a complete disaster, and ruined SWG as well.

I know EQ:N is now in limbo, and may never be released, but I'd say the chance of it being any good are now 1000% better without Smed at the helm.

It's funny that McQuaid and Smed get all the credit for making EQ great. I personally think it was great in spite of them. Because their projects since EQ have all been disasters.

Ding dong, the Smed is gone.

Still hoping EQ:N sees the light of day, but there doesn't seem to have been much news for a while :(

I played on the time locked server waiting for EQ:N to arise from it's grave (it's not dead but may as well be) got bored and moved on.
When it does arrive (if ever) it'll be badly outpaced/outgunned by the current MMO's around.

For everyone interested in EQ Next have you guys looked into Pantheon Rise of the Fallen? It looks like the true successor to EQ and Vanguard being made by Brad McQuaid who was obviously one of the creators of EQ and Vanguard. Personally I'm more excited about Pantheon than I am about EQ Next.

Yeah same here. I started an account on Project 1999 recently and met a really nice player within 30 minutes of starting on the server. Seems like a really nice community although they have a spam filter in place which makes it really hard to communicate for the first 5 levels of playing.

It'll keep me busy until Pantheon comes out at least :).

After stumbling on this thread I took a look at a YouTube video. Rather nice. :) I'll keep an eye out and see how it progresses. I never did play Vanguard much at all even though it appealed to me (work than one out), but the fact that the dude involved in this was a developer for Vanguard has caught my attention.

I have been following this game, I was and still am a hardcore Everquest nut (1999-2008), but I fear McQuaid's best days are behind him.

He is about as reliable as a chocolate fireguard if the rumour mill holds true. Previous employees on the Pantheon game claim he pushed a third of the kickstarter money up his own nose and to pay 'bills' once the funds were released.

I was also someone that got stung with Vanguard....remember that one? The launch was a disaster.

The game does look interesting, and I will probably end up playing it, but an Everquest beater.......nah!

Project 1999 is a great server....if you are casual. Thinking about end game raiding? Unless you can commit the same amount of time as an unemployed sock pooper think again.

i think EQN will be released but think they had a change in direction hence they not gonna say nothing in public till the right time. Pantheon Rise of the Fallen could be huge if they get it right. miss the old EQ days(they just don't makes games like they used to)

There will never be another game like early EQ. Because another EQ wouldn't have mass-market appeal. It's a numbers game, now. You don't intentionally release a niche game, if you think you have a chance of being the next WoW.

And that's why all modern MMOs follow the same formula, and why they all suck. They're all chasing the big numbers. A few thousand players isn't enough to develop a game for.

I agree. WOW changed the landscape.

Everquest initially appealed because the world was just so visual outside other MMOs at the time. I came from Ultima Online and the difference was night and day. The only other '3d' MMO at the time was Meridian 59. Everquest though used 3dfx and actively promoted glide at a time when the PC gaming possibilities were changing with great 3d rendering(unreal, quake 2 etc)

Right place, right time, right design.

I pretty much have a crack at every MMO now that comes out, but none of them achieve the magic of Everquest. The highlight for me was the Velious expansion which came at a time when I was fresh out of Uni and looking for work. My investment in an end game raiding guild (innoruuk server) made finding a job a lot longer....I was that engrossed.

The other thing is, EQ put the world first, and the player second. It wasn't afraid to knock the player off his perch. It didn't treat him like a spoilt prince. Didn't tell him how amazing he was, how no-one else could possibly save the village. Indeed, many shopkeepers would tell you to bog off if you came to them at the wrong time :p They weren't just vending machines conveniently placed for the player's benefit, they had routines, they shut up shop, went home, and chatted with other NPCs.

It was actually fantastic following NPCs around, seeing what they got up to, listening in to their conversations.

And you had to talk to NPCs using keywords, or even whole phrases. There was no "click on the big flashing !!! symbol for your next quest". You had to know what to ask, and who to ask. Then you could progress. Such a great touch.

But that kind of system appeals to a certain mindset. One with patience; puzzle solving; interest in being immersed into the world; acceptance of NPCs as actors not vendors; love of reading and a good story.

Now, having also played WoW, I don't think you can say that these things have mass market appeal. There was so little quest text in WoW, and you know what? 50% of players at least couldn't even read a single paragraph telling them what to do next.

So many times a quest said "Kill 10 things at the roundabout near blah island." And in chat, people who just clicked through the text would be spamming "Where do I find things?"

EQ's design was amazing up to and including Velious. But you needed to be a fan or roleplaying games, and around at '99-2001 to have experienced it properly. It won't happen again, because the nature of the game industry has changed. It's all about appeasing those with no time and no investment, chasing the pink unicorn of "accessibility", and abandoning your good ideas if they won't sell (enough).
