**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

I kept reloading the save file before that fight and I passed her dialogue once, she gave me the password and ran for her life so I shot her. My companion then started attacking me as well for some reason

I didn't want to kill him too so I reloaded the save file and since then had no luck lol. She told me about the place but not the password which I really want as I suck in hacking terminals.

Was going to ask here, any tips on hacking terminals? I find it very difficult to do even the easy ones!

Yes, save game - randomly click words and reload game until you get the right one or download the mod that just displays the correct word (you still have to pass the skill check before the mod will kick in).

Awful mini game.

It's pretty easy though. Say you GAVE first and it's two words right they are in the right order. So if you see another word with *A*E in it then the chances are it'll be that.

Some times takes me two or three attempts mind.

really? by the time you level up hacking a couple of times the number of duds you can remove and the tries reset is more than enough to get it most times

I just don't like it as a mini game - been bypassing it since FO3. I make sure any mod I use keeps the skill check as I don't want access to any terminal without the necessary skill.

Why save? Just guess three times, and if wrong, exit the terminal and go back in. You're only locked out if you're wrong on the 4th time.

You can remove wrong answers and get your tries reset by finding brackets like ( ), [ ], { } or < > on the same row. The brackets don't have to be next to each other, but they do need to be on the same row.

Edit: Lockout is only for 10 seconds too, so you can just wait and try again.

The hacking minigame is so easy though... I find it to be a brief and enjoyable aside that comes up now and then (and let's face it, anything which isn't shooting things repeatedly is a welcome diversion in this game!)

To the guy asking for tips... it's all just about eliminating which remaining words cannot be right... here's some attempt at an example or two that might get you thinking the right way:

If you've already guessed MISSILE and it tells you "1 match" (or "2 matches") then there is no point trying GRISTLE - they share 3 letters (the S and LE) so the only way it could be right was if MISSILE had 3 matches...

If you've guessed THAT and PART on two separate guesses and they both told you "1 match" then the correct answer must have a T as the last character, as that is the only character those two words share - so you should not guess any other words which do not have a T as the last letter...

However following on from the above, you still shouldn't guess GNAT... even though it ends in a T... because like in the first example with MISSILE + GRISTLE - GNAT and THAT share 2 letters, so the fact that the terminal told you THAT has "1 match" tells you that GNAT cannot be right

I just killed everyone (standard), looted all the cash and she has a note on her with how to get in to the lab.

Cool, makes sense. I still hate it though, and a welcome distraction for me is building my tree house bar in sanctuary :D

Don't forget to look out for brackets. Stuff like <> () [] {} with anything in between on the same line will either reset your tries or remove a wrong word.

Learned this in FO3 by mistake and glad to see its still in FO4.

it's possible to eliminate every single answer but the right one using these brackets - I'll try and dig a screenie out of it.

Thank you very much for the help guys, that makes it a lot easier now. It's been a while since I played FO3 so I don't remember how I used to hack the terminals.

15 hours in and I have only done a handful of quests :D
Cleared out the brewery earlier on today, was disappointed. Such a big building with nothing useful in it :(

Wish games came with lovely manuals like the old days, nothing with this game, and if ever a game needs one, its fallout 4

That's so they can sell you the Prima guide!

On another note, having just encountered my first cluster of Super Mutants (as related a couple of pages back), it's almost a shame to kill them as their comments and repartee are quite witty and at times cutting. I believe you can befriend one as a companion later on but it's a shame the FO world casts them as bad guys when they're just trying to survive like everyone else. Guess I won't be siding with the BoS, then.

Do you click the brackets or what's between them?

The brackets :) The RHS of the pair.

I

when it says correct match it means not just the letter but the location of the letter is correwct too

so 0 matches is very useful as you can eliminate anyword that has any one of those leters in those positions.

hover over a word and it puts it in the bottom right ready toenter and its easy to see at aglance if anything matches up

what seems weird is theyve gone from the army with high pwoered weapons to basicaly green raiders with pipe rifles

Latest NMM didn't fix the mods vanishing from the plugins.txt! So when I loaded the game it complained about missing content. So if you've got NMM check if the mods are unticked, tick them and launch the game through the Fallout4.exe or NMM NOT the launcher

Single shot one is already insane anyway!

Cant actually remember where I got mine......mostly save it for tough battles.

IIRC the brotherhood vendor sells one(could be wrong).

'The Last Minute', sold by Ronnie at the castle (she needs to be in the armory), and the brotherhood vendor. Both super expensive. Haven't tried, but could try pickpocket Ronnie and sneak into the Brotherhood shop (stealth boy?).
